Why do governments lie to their own people?

Why do governments lie to their own people?
Because they fear the people.

Why do governments hide what they do from their own people?
Because they fear accountabiliy

Why do governments mistreat their own people?
So they can contrast how they reward their exclusive friends.

Why do governments accept bribes?
Because they hold laws in contempt.

Why do governments torture?
Because they are not human.

3. Mostly because they can. Authority figures do a bang up job of
reminding people of their powerlessness, and the average person just wants to be left alone and has enough to deal with without worrying even more about how he's getting screwed over by his government. Keeping the sheeple in their place allows those in charge to run roughshod over them - and they do.
