Why all the rage against Colin Powell?
Yet more attacks on Colin Powell from the Cheney/Limbaugh wing of the GOP (via CNN: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/05/10/cheney-powell-no-longer-a-republican/).

"My take on it was Colin had already left the party," Cheney said. "I didn't know he was still a Republican."

The former vice president noted that Powell endorsed then-Sen. Barack Obama in last year's presidential race. "I assume that that's some indication of his loyalty and his interests," Cheney said.

Why do these guys keep pushing on someone they've already dismissed as irrelevant? Here's two possibilities.

1) Powell was Bush's Secretary of State during some very interesting times. Cheney & co. now face potentially very serious legal issues regarding their use of torture, and Powell probably knows where some bodies are buried. Powell's credibility therefore may threaten Cheney & co.

2) As a potential moderate, African-American, Republican candidate, Powell has the potential to lead the GOP to a more moderate direction. The "Cheney wing" of the GOP would be relegated to "schismatic" status. Also not good for Cheney & co.

Edited on Sun May-10-09 01:17 PM by Mr. Ected
If you're not with us, you're against us.

They apply this standard to Republicans and non-Republicans alike.

And did throughout the Bush presidency.

5. Maybe Powell has threatened to reveal information damaging to Cheney?
Powell's endorsement of Obama last year is old news. Why attack Powell now unless Dickie's scared about something new coming out?

10. Maybe Cheney & co. figure that, if something _does_ come out, they'll really need
the support of the GOP as much as possible. So Powell is doubly-threatening to him. Imagine (in some beautiful fantasy world) if Cheney & co. are indicted, AND the GOP drops him and his cronies like a hot potato at the same time?

6. Cheney and Powell hate each other
Remember the entire Powell trying to talk * out of invading Iraq and Cheney pushing for invasion thing that was going in 2002.

Powell ended up playing the good soldier and lying at the United Nations.

I wish he would have just resigned over the entire incident so he could be held in higher esteem.

20. Toeing the company didn't get him far in the end. . .
And the rabid repukes are always on attack looking for distractions - and they were probably embarrassed that such a high-ranking republican supported the opposition.

7. Powell is better than Limbaugh..but then, the easiest thing is to be better than Limbaugh
And we should not forget that Powell lied to us about WMD, just because he endorsed our guy.

8. IMO, Powell was blackmailed to go before the UN with that WMD vial
and he may be close to breaking out and exposing them all.
So, if he is destroyed by the media first, the public opinions and possible subsequent actions that may or may not be taken against him by the GOP making him their fall guy, could make or break this latest attempt at framing the issues while they seek to cover their collective lying, war-mongering asses for their treasonous acts of war, torture and genocide.

....just MHO

He went in front of the U.N. to justify a horrible thing called WAR and lied his ass off and went against his beliefs (of course, I don't know for sure just surmising about his internal beliefs) - why? A chance for Vice Presidency? Obama NEVER supported this illegal war.

17. Did he say something recently? If not, here are my guesses for why
1) He's Black
2) He's a moderate Republican
3) Maybe his resignation and the torture memos and their timing have a connection.

21. I don't think that's the whole story, though. There are plenty of people
they could be ganging up on. Why so much attention to Powell? I don't think anyone expects an African-American migration to the GOP, so why is Powell a target?

24. Colin reneged on his deal-with-the-devil
Edited on Sun May-10-09 04:17 PM by SoCalDem
He's an odd-duck.. Of course, a man like Colin Powell would have a higher profile as a republican, so his choice of that party is no surprise, but when he made his deal with them, he thought it was because of WHO he was..not what he was.. he was mistaken, and has finally decided to walk it back a little.

Republicans hate him because he was THEIR "black guy", and they think they treated him fine, and he;s "betrayed" them.. dems never understood HOW he could align with "them", and never trusted him. many may have felt a little sorry for him, and had hopes that at least maybe he could moderate them, but after his UN performance-art appearance, most dems were through with him..

He's alone now./.with neither side "on" his side..
