Obama would ax abstinence-only funding

If Congress approves President Obama's budget requests, there will be no more federal funding of abstinence-only education programs.

Barack Obama has recommended completely zeroing out Title V abstinence programs to states, as well as abstinence education programs to community-based organizations (CBAE) and replacing them with more than $100 million for contraceptive-based sex-education programs. The massive omnibus bill signed by the president had already reduced funding to abstinence programs by $14 million.

Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association, questions the president's motives for axing abstinence education funding.

"His rationale is that he wants...taxpayer dollars to be going towards science-based programs -- programs that show that they are successful at reducing teen pregnancy and discouraging sexual activity," she explains.

"Well, if he's truly concerned about that then he certainly should not have zeroed out abstinence education, because it actually has more research showing its effectiveness than what he's replacing it with -- which is contraceptive sex education."

Huber believes "the health of youth is being sacrificed" for the president's appeasement of liberal special-interest groups that have been demanding he eliminate abstinence-only education funding.

i bet she can't cite one scientific study that shows abstinence is more effective than education and birth control.

then again, when have facts and honesty ever influenced a fundy rant?

If contraceptives are such an abysimal failure as they say, why do married couples have so few children nowadays? Abstinence in marriage until menopause?

God frowns upon those who save it for marriage. I myself am a prophet and have received this revelation, so I know it to be so. You can object that my theology is shamelessly invented, to which I can only reply that it is after all theology.
