9. On average, 44 people are murdered every day in the US.
44 people will be murdered today. 24 of them will be shot to death. 260 women will be raped. 1152 will be robbed or mugged. 176,966 people will be the victim of some sort of violent or invasive crime.

A few of the more interesting crimes might get a small mention in their local media. Most won't even get that. The odds of it hitting the national media? You have a better shot at winning the lottery.

A single 26 year old woman was found raped and strangled in her apartment in Modesto California (home of Laci Peterson) yesterday. The day before that, a 60+ year old woman was carjacked, beaten, and run over by a thief in that same city. The day before that, an innocent pair of 13 and 14 year old boys were shot to death by a gangbanger while waiting in their parents car in one of the cities seedier neighborhoods. All of these stories made the local paper, but none made it beyond that. Why did the Peterson case make national news while these others didn't? Who knows...all had those potential "heartstrings" hooks that could have turned them into national stories, but none made it.

12. WIthout denying that the death of the Wesleyan student
Edited on Wed May-13-09 01:58 PM by hedgehog
was a terrible thing, it is bothersome that her death made the national news and the equally senseless death of this young man did not.

On edit: of course, the death of suburban kids at school calls for national soul searching while the death of city kids at school is lucky to make the top of the the B section.

4. it wasn't on school grounds
People get shot at a lot in their personal life (unfortunately). When it happens where white people go to school, then it's a big deal.

6. how come each one of these hasn't been big news?

I don't think any of them were on school grounds while class was in session. It's when it happens on school grounds and a child has no choice but to be in the line of gunfire that it's big news. He got shot doing something he didn't NEED to be doing.
