Girl allegedly uses gun to force sister to play
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – Police said an 11-year-old girl threatened her 7-year-old sister with a gun to force the younger child to play with her on Monday at her grandmother's residence. Police said the girl also pointed the .38-caliber pistol at her grandmother. The child surrendered the gun after the grandmother made several demands for it.

The weapon wasn't loaded but police believe the girl didn't know that.

Police said the two girls argued and the 11-year-old then retrieved the gun from her grandmother's bedroom.

She was being held at a juvenile detention center on charges of brandishing a weapon and domestic assault.

That girl really wanted to play!

2. How in the HELL did she get that pistol in the first place?
If it was her grandmother's pistol, I think cops and child welfare agents need to have a little chat with her...

9. Bingo
But gun worshipers think their responsibility ends when they put the gun down.

10. The only gun I'll keep in the house...
...is an old breech-loading 12-gauge shotgun, which is a family heirloom.

It sports a pretty substantial trigger lock, despite the fact that I'll probably never shoot it, because on the offchance that someone should actually bother to steal it, they'll never be able to remove the lock - it'll just be a fancy club in their hands.

20. responsibility does not equal criminal prosecution

Most gun owners are very conscientious of their guns and prevent unauthorized access. But if your point is that even though there relatively few accidental shootings with children, there are still too many because of carelessness -- I agree with you.

21. That has nothing to do with your original broad brush smear.
You said: "But gun worshipers think their responsibility ends when they put the gun down."

Responsible so called "gun worshipers" would never let this happen. And most "gun worshipers" are responsible. Now, we can sort through the twisted logic of your original comment or you can admit you mispoke.

19. Not really.
I think a distinction can be made between gun owners, who are responsible, and gun worshipers, who are clearly nuts.

I'm a former gun owner and I will be buying a shotgun sometime this year. It will have ammo kept in a separate safe from the gun safe. Both will be bolted to the foundations of the house. If someone breaks into my house they will have to worry more about the irate dude in the bathrobe with the baseball bat and the combat knife rather than the shotgun.

Those of us who own guns must admit that we have all met gun nuts, and they are really not safe people. Comments?

22. Thank you recognizing & acknowledging the distinction I make.
I have no problem with responsible gun ownership, which is definitely NOT depicted in the story in the OP.

24. It's clear that this woman wasn't "responsible"
But the use of "gun worshipers" is meant to destroy the discussion.

23. The use of "gun worshipers" is a smear.
There is no way to make the distinction between "gun owners" and "gun worshipers" because we can't agree on the difference. The use of "gun worshipers" creates a bad feeling amongst a group of people.

My definition of "gun worshipers" and yours probably differs, so we're not on an even playing field. We can argue about whether this gun owner was "responsible" or not. Obviously she wasn't (IMHO).

25. And responsible gun owners don't think that.
So what's your point? That this grandmother was a "gun worshiper?"

5. Just exercising her Constitutional rights.
Her playtime was being threatened by the 7-year-old. She defended herself.

End of story.

6. To help prevent this: Give the gift of a quick access lockbox to your family member or friend.

I like mechanical push button lock boxes such as AMSEC PB48. Mine has a loaded .357 in it and it sits on top of the piano in my living room. Totally safe, but quick to access.

Other people like the biometric/electronic variety.

I sometimes give them as baby shower presents.

Then they could take their time opening it.

15. Of course, but their purpose is to keep kids out. These are tough boxes.

These are tough boxes. Not the type of metal boxes you get in a regular store.

They can be attached to a larger, permanent structure, but that's a another level of security.

7. The problem here is that the seven year old was unarmed.
If she had a gun too, she could have refused to play.
