The Greatest Bait and Switch in History
Johnathon Turley:

"This Administration is becoming the greatest bait and switch in history."

Paraphrasing another point he made on the Rachel Maddow show:

By making the argument that anything that can embarass the US Government is a matter of national security, the Government can now effectively squelch ANY news it wants.

Thank you, Obama.

:sarcasm:

15. I don't think that's true. There was no bait-and-switch with Bush.
There was never any serious indication that he would be anything but a big spending, far-Right, war-mongering, divisive asshole eager to destroy America's standing in the world.

25. Not so fast
That label was ridiculous from the outset, and I doubt it convinced anyone to vote for him who wasn't already going to vote for him anyway.

Granted, he flat out lied about some things (uniter not a divider, etc.) but that's not so much a bait-and-switch as a straightforward lie.

I was thinking in terms of the switch pulled on the middle, but you're right in that he fooled the Right! Somehow it doesn't sting as much when they get screwed.

11. I guess we all assumed that as a Constitutional Law Prof., he'd actually try to
adhere to the constitution.. But he was at the University of Chicago.. and most of his students couldn't tell what party orientation he was. Even in law school he rose to the top by being very leveled and in the middle.

He is very middle road. He's not stupid, but he's also green.. and who knows how much we don't know about the secret govt he's trying to dismantle behind the scenes. They won't give in willingly.

13. I think Obama has decided to retain the excessive power Bush gave the WH
The secrets, the signing statements, the wiretapping, the ability to wage war without Constitutional authority.

I dont like that, I dont condone that, this is the antithesis of the campaign Obama ran in 2008.

There are many times when I think back to the person I voted for and wonder where he went.

17. Let's go to the link (and note the word "considering), spell the guy's name correctly, and
accurately represent his thoughts, at least. Otherwise, why bother?

http://jonathanturley.org/2009/05/14/obama-considering-continuing-bush-policy-of-indefinite-detentions-without-trial/

The discussion at the link is a bit more nuanced than "Waaaaaaaaah!!! Obama BAD!! Bad, bad, BAD!!!"

There are a few jerks sprinkled up in there, but overall the tone is more complex.

It is not surprising that civil libertarians feel that we have succeeded in merely upgrading to Bush 1.2 (with the added ability to pronounce multisyllabic terms).

So I guess he really believes Obama is no better than Bush.

Well fuck him.

26. You don't have to agree with Turley. I don't. Look at the responses to his thesis.
That's where the money is. They're way more nuanced than "Obama is a poopie butt, we hate him, he's baaaaaaad! I'm taking my ball and going home! He sucks, he's always sucked, he'll always suck, too! The Democrats are all bastards!!! Fuck them!!!"

That's about the level of discussion here lately, unfortunately. It's getting really boring, too--good thing summer's coming, I guess!

Where are all the people who want to pull apart the issues and delve into the details without ascribing mendacious motives in kneejerk fashion, I wonder? Where are the people who can stand back and look at the big picture and take the long view, and discuss current events from that context? Where are the thoughtful opinions?

They're not here in the numbers they used to be, unfortunately. This place is overpopulated with people who do triple duty as Judge, Jury and Executioner--and they don't even bother to hear the case before they rule.

I'm just getting tired of "Waaaah--hang him high!!!" on every other idiotic post. It's every bit as stupid as "Canonize him as a Saint, He Can Do No Wrong."

All heat, no light.

There are stupid ones there, too, but at least there's a bit of variety and some thought in some of them. It's an improvement!
