Elgin (IL) bans single-serve beer, wine
Elgin bans single-serve beer, wine

By Amanda Marrazzo | Special to the Tribune
May 14, 2009

Elgin City Council members Wednesday approved an amended ordinance prohibiting the sale of single-serve beer and wine products to help combat public drunkenness.

The ban, which will go into effect June 15, is an attempt to rid the city of lewd behaviors which have been a growing nuisance--especially in the summer--in train and bus stations, on bike and jogging paths, along the river and in nearby neighborhoods, officials said.

The ban applies to an area bounded by Summit and Wing Streets on the north, Bluff City Boulevard and U.S. Highway 20 on the south, Liberty Street on the east and McLean Boulevard on the west. There are about 30 grocers, liquor stores and gas stations in that area that will be affected by the ban.

The ordinance bans the sale of about 40 beers and malt liquors that are often sold in 40-ounce quantities. Included is Bull Ice, Keystone Ice and King Cobra Malt, which typically sell for $2 to $3 for a 40-ounce container. Banned wines Gino's Premium Blend and MD 20/20, which sell for about $3 per bottle.

4. Yup, it looks that way.
Can't have black people sitting outside enjoying a large bottle of something to drink. :eyes:

You have to be like white people, who are more likely to sit in cheap dive bars and down a six pack of something that comes in smaller bottles or cans.

If all the black kids started walking around sharing a six packs of bud (ick) would the cops leave them alone? Somehow I doubt it. They'd still target them for being outside, or find some other excuse.

Can't stop arresting people for being black. The police would have nothing to do otherwise. x(

2. DC has banned single sales in many areas
When a new grocery store opens and applies for a liquor license, many of those living in the neighborhood try to stop them. They usually end up compromising with the stores getting their licenses and agreeing not to sell single servings of alcohol.

6. Prohibition was a federal law. There are thousands of 'dry' areas
in the country.

Edited on Thu May-14-09 06:18 PM by doc03
certain types of alcoholic beverages sort of like calling them Saturday Night Specials or Assault Weapons. This country is getting like the old USSR, I'll bet there are Fundies and Republicans behind that one.

8. Prohibition didn't stop drinking and neither will this.
It was tried with coffee too.
From the History of Coffee.

In 1511, the governor of Mecca, Khair Beg, saw some worshippers drinking coffee in a mosque as they prepared for a night-long prayer vigil. Angered, he drove them from the mosque and ordered all coffeehouses in Mecca to be closed. This incited the pro-coffee Muslims and a heated debate soon ensued. In this dispute, two unscrupulous Persian doctors, the Hakimani brothers, who were infamous for testifying on the side of the highest bidder, condemned coffee as an unhealthy brew. The doctors had good reason for wanted it banned, for it was popular cure among the depressed patients who would otherwise have paid the doctors to cure them. The matter was only resolved when the Sultan of Cairo, Khair Beg's superior, intervened, demanding that a drink that was widely enjoyed in Cairo should not have been banned without his permission. Khair Beg soon paid for his insolence. In 1512, he was accused of embezzlement and the Sultan sentenced him to death.
