Tuesday's mayoral election was fresh evidence that Omaha is a Democratic town.
"The city of Omaha is today a much harder place for Republicans to be successful," said David Kramer, a Republican and Omaha attorney.
Even as Omaha adds Republican-leaning areas such as Elkhorn through annexation, the Democratic domination continues to grow. Since 2001, for example, Democrats have more than doubled their partisan lead, from about 8,200 to 19,300 registered voters.
Not long ago, 72nd Street was the clear dividing line between Republican- and Democratic-leaning precincts. These days, Democrats hold the advantage in more than two dozen precincts west of 72nd Street. Only two GOP precincts lie east of 72nd Street, in the Fairacres and Memorial Park neighborhoods.
