For anyone who's been watching, Dick Cheney has been setting up the torture issue as a wedge issue for over two years, since the Democrats took control of Congress. He's clearly been itching for a political battle, on this. Why do you think Cheney wants this discussion to happen right now? Not a year ago, not a year from now, but RIGHT NOW?
We shouldn't be letting the guy who authorized the torture be the one who controls the public debate or the timing thereof. He should just shut the hell up and be glad he's not under indictment YET.
This whole thing is a political hit-job intended to rope Obama into a political debate that hurts him and divides the country. That's the last thing the country needs right now. Trying to to divide us in a time of war is exactly what got his party to where it is now. So, that's the answer to the timing question. Cheney's intent is to bring down Obama.
Torture is a very important issue. But with millions of Americans out of work, and two wars underway, it's not the only issue. I don't see Cheney offering anything constructive. All he is doing is trying to divide the country in a desperate attempt to repair his legacy. As long as Cheney is getting airtime, we're mired down in his little game.
Can't Obama or the Democrats shut him up?!? Perhaps by reminding him loudly and publicly how tenuous his legal defense is becoming? It is particularly insidious that Dick Cheney had torture OUTSOURCED. This means the people doing it were making a @$%^@ profit off of it. For some reason, this fact is not part of the discussion. Does this mean we're rushing this discussion?
