This week's Sunday shows will be filled with chatter on enhanced interrogation techniques, focusing on Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) accusation that the CIA lied to her during classified briefings and President Obama's decision not to release photos of possible detainee abuse.
On CBS's "Face the Nation," Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, will square off against Anthony Romero of the ACLU. The ACLU's lawsuit has led to the detainee photo impasse, pushing the Obama administration to argue in court that releasing the photos would endanger U.S. soldiers.
On "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) will debate Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) on whether the U.S. is safer under Obama. Kyl sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which held a hearing this week on the so-called “torture memos.” Kyl also objects to administration plans to transfer some Guantanamo detainees into U.S. facilities. Webb, a former Secretary of the Navy and member of the Armed Services Committee, supports the administration's decision to close Guantanamo.
On CNN's "State of the Union," House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) will discuss torture and the future of the GOP with John King. Boehner has been one of Pelosi's fiercest critics on the briefings controversy. "he Speaker has too many stories on this issue," Boehner told reporters yesterday. “She's provided more questions than she has provided answers."
King will also quiz Peter Orszag, director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), on issues ranging from healthcare reform to the budget deficit.
Meanwhile, "Fox News Sunday" will lead with the controversy over President Obama delivering the commencement address at Notre Dame. Rev. Richard McBrien, a theologian at Notre Dame, and Father Frank Pavone, a pro-life activist, will discuss the flare-up with Chris Wallace. In the second segment, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will sit down for a one-on-one. Expect O'Connell to address Obama's pending Supreme Court nomination, among other topics.
NBC's "Meet the Press" will play host to the first joint interview with RNC Chairman Michael Steele and DNC Chairman Tim Kaine. Steele has endured a bumpy tenure so far, with party members stripping him of some powers over the RNC's financial apparatus.
