Michael Steele: Gay marriage will hurt the economy because gay couples will have more money
Republicans can reach a broader base by recasting gay marriage as an issue that could dent pocketbooks as small businesses spend more on health care and other benefits, GOP Chairman Michael Steele said Saturday.

Steele said that was just an example of how the party can retool its message to appeal to young voters and minorities without sacrificing core conservative principles. Steele said he used the argument weeks ago while chatting on a flight with a college student who described herself as fiscally conservative but socially liberal on issues like gay marriage.

"Now all of a sudden I've got someone who wasn't a spouse before, that I had no responsibility for, who is now getting claimed as a spouse that I now have financial responsibility for," Steele told Republicans at the state convention in traditionally conservative Georgia. "So how do I pay for that? Who pays for that? You just cost me money."

So... if we get rid of marriage benefits altogether, then that would be really good for the economy, right?

Have children out of wedlock and NEVER get married, it will be a boost to the economy. Michael Steele says so! Seriously!

1. Just how stupid is Michael Steele?
Just when you think he's shown you how much, he does something even stupider.

7. Grover Norquist? Well, having dingdongs like Steele in any form of public office helps...
...if you want the government to fail. Funny so many people who hate the government happen to be in it, but whatever...

What does this Steele dud(e) do for a living again?

Just a play on words... seemed pertinent as I've always equated Norquist as being a monster...

6. The man has schizophrenia!
1. The more people who have money to spend on goods and services are why our economy works.
2. Being gay, straight, or even porkin' toasters has NOTHING to do with it.
3. You're right; marriage and civil unions should be banned - but then all of Steele's buddies will lament the collapse of the family. And then, as usual, blame the wrong people because that's more important than thinking. (Not that the Dems are the same; they don't think for different reasons...)
4. Can't he afford professional help and get the Seroquel he so desperately needs?

9. So he is going to use some of the discrimination
part of not allowing gay marriage as a reason not to allow it? And while making the insurance argument to the groups that are most likely to be uninsured or under-insured?

To think he came across as the sane, civil part of the governors office once upon a time.

12. How does that even make sense?
What is all this about "financial responsibility" for someone? When 2 people marry (or even move in together), they cut their housing budgets in half, giving both partners substantially more money to spend.

Using that logic, the Republicans should be urging all gay people to marry!
