23. Using Republican logic on torture
it means that McCain is a traitor because he gave up useful information to the enemy...

However, if they say that McCain's tortured confessions were false that means the Republican torture policy was wrong...it's a Catch-22 for the Repubs.

McCain-Feingold worked people.

The McCain campaign simply couldn't raise the cash needed due to the limited constraints governed by that law.

McCain-Feingold doesn't go nearly far enough but it showed us one thing.

THAT CAMPAIGN FINANCE LAWS EVEN IN A WEAK FORM LIKE M-F EMPOWER PROGRESS.

WE NEED STRONGER LAWS, MUCH STRONGER.

People, learn from the election of '08.

It's a glaring fact that we have somewhat ignored.

Why?

Demand campaign finance reform!

Peace

32. In a nutshell..
The Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 (BCRA, McCain–Feingold Act, Pub.L. 107-155, 116 Stat. 81, enacted March 27, 2002) is United States federal law that amended the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, which regulates the financing of political campaigns. Its chief sponsors were Senators Russell Feingold (D-WI) and John McCain (R-AZ). The law became effective on 6 November 2002, and the new legal limits became effective on January 1, 2003.

As noted in McConnell v. Federal Election Commission, a United States Supreme Court ruling on the BCRA, the Act was designed to address two issues:

1.The increased role of soft money in campaign financing, by prohibiting national political party committees from raising or spending any funds not subject to federal limits, even for state and local races or issue discussion.

2.The proliferation of issue advocacy ads, by defining as "electioneering communications" broadcast ads that name a federal candidate within 30 days of a primary or caucus or 60 days of a general election, and prohibiting any such ad paid for by a corporation (including non-profit issue organizations such as Right to Life or the Environmental Defense Fund) or paid for by an unincorporated entity using any corporate or union funds.

Pres Bush signed this into law predicting that the Supreme Court would overturn many key provision that he opposed in the bill. He was dead wrong.

You were saying it was effective.

What was it effective at?

The only thing it was effective at was moving us further and further away from public financing.

40. Just trying to raise awareness..
.. to the importance of how our limited and relatively weak finance laws made a MONUMENTAL difference in the outcome of '08 and Obama's win.

As I've said earlier in this thread, we need much tougher campaign finance laws.

The lack of tough laws has enabled political corruption in America to the point where we can hardly differentiate between the two parties.

Do I need to break out Sen Max Baucus' donor list again?

His top 100 donors list is stacked with health insurers, Big Pharm, Investment banks. And he still calls himself a Dem.

Max Baucus owes allegiance to his masters because of weak campaign finance laws.

Hence, Single Payer Universal Health Care gets swept under the table.

Lack of campaign finance laws has stopped progress and prog policies dead in their tracks.

Now, do you see the importance of raising awareness?

35. Election '04 and '08 are a world apart.
Internet fundraising existed in '04. But nowhere near what net FR grew to in '08.

Obama put internet fundraising on the map and net FR is largely credited in his victory.

Obama has been a lifelong master of grass roots organizing. Including the massive grass roots net fundraising drive created by his campaign.

To say the least, it was sheer fucking brilliance on Obama's part.
