What does one need to know to organize a protest?
In the event that Prop 8 is upheld,I'm trying to organize a protest in my city, because nobody has organized one yet, it seems.

I've never organized a protest before. What do I need to know?

1. A whole lotta phone numbers ...
If that's not possible, I'd suggest you'd contact the GLBT groups in your area about your plans. I've been told the Tornoto bear scene is pretty big.

4. Media pranks, Well placed Ads and controversy are always more effective.

Sorry to say it but 90% of protests receive little attention ESPECIALLY for all the effort of gathering people (who all already agree with you)

5. Lots of email contacts
We have built up a local list of close to 1000 names. If you don't have that then email everyone you know and ask them to email everyone they know.

Alternative newspapers are usually willing to write articles promoting your rally.

Make up a slick flier, pick a location that is in a public spot, contact local cops (as a courtesy) and start sending out your fliers.

If it's a good cause people will come.

a legitimate protest and refuse any attempts by authorities relegating your protest to "free speech zones". If you really want to make some noise, set up highway cones and block an area of a street.

8. Press release
Who, what, when and where, very simple one page press release faxed to every news org around.

Grow it from the grassroots. 10 people carrying signs ought to get it started. If it is a worthwhile cause it will grow. If you can herd the cats it will be worthwhile.

Just remember it is not about you, it is about the cause.

On the other hand, people like to be led by someone they can look up to so your leader has to be somewhat of an inspiring figure.

IOW, while the cause is utmost, it is a people problem that you face in order to become a success.
