Mary Kay Letourneau is the crazy-faced former teacher who was convicted of raping her 13-year-old student over 10 years ago. Just one reason I love Gloria Allred, no matter how showboating she can sometimes be: she lambasted his ass for being homophobic and anti-women the whole time he was in Congress, and won a $10 million lawsuit against him for defamation of character (she settled for something like $50,000).

I read her story and did feel compassion for her.

Even here at DU, child molesters are routinely condemned as "monsters," and many threads about them include at least one post along the lines of "I'm usually against the death penalty, but..."

LeTourneau could have done the same thing. Her intended was obviously willing to wait, and as the adult she had the responsibility for setting that limit.

Depending on what version of history you find, either the match was 1875 and they got married 1 year later, when she was 16, or the match was 1881, and they got married a year later, when she was 22.

Basic lesson is that if an adult is in love with a minor, then s/he needs to have the self-control to wait until the kid is old enough.
