The Cheney Trap

It is not from the brilliance of Barack Obama or the Democrats that this trap has been set. It is from the ignorance and lack of empathy within the Republican Party. They have no idea that they are wading into a trap.

They have now tied their star to Dick Cheney's wagon. They support water-boarding. They support breaking the laws and crapping on our Constitution because they have been told by Mr Cheney that it was necessary. And they believe Mr Cheney.

No amount of reason or case studies or rational explanation can penetrate their partisan skulls. They have set their sails and they are ready for the long journey. They liked Mr Cheney's speech because no one else would have the gall to give such a speech.

This is the trap that the Republicans are falling into. They must defend torture. They must offer an argument against the Geneva Convention and our own Constitution. They must prove the unprovable. But it would only be a waste of energy to feel sorry for any of them.

I'm watching this train wreck in slow motion with total joy and delight. This is the equivalent of how the guilty party always used to break down and confess on the old "Perry Mason" show.

But, what's astonishing is that they apparently have absolutely no idea what is happening. They just keep doing incredibly stupid stuff - like the renaming of the "Democrat Socialist Party" - while they're on fire.

It highlights how horribly contrary they are and always have been. Without someone to hate, something to be against, they are hollow, empty vessels, bereft of content or ideas. Tonight, Tweety quoted that RNC stands for "Rush, Newt, and Cheney," and that's what they have in the way of "leadership."

They're unbelievable. A gift that keeps on giving. And their biggest future star is the likes of Eric Cantor?

Cheney, if he's gone as rogue as some think he has, is throwing shovelsful of dirt on the coffin of the Republican Party, and no one has the balls to come out and say that he's not representative of their ideas. I wonder what they DO believe in.

When the only people who will publicly support Cheney are Gingrich, Lyn and Liz Cheney, that party has problems. They like what he's doing but the majority are terrified to support him publicly. He is a toxic, lying war criminal and they know that.

that the only people that seem to be supporting him right now are the right-wingers that call into C-SPAN and those that call into talk radio. But then again, that is about all they have left in their Party...

He promotes the energy and military industries that want the flow of money to continue until...

The money is talking and pushing stuff around through him, and people have been known to like die if they get in the way. Hence the arrogance in admitting crimes and daring anyone to arrest him. But behind the arrogance is fear -why else would he emerge from his cave?

It is ugly, and the grandoldpartyers have to be divided and shamed by this horror show, but are about powerless to do anything honorable.
