Interesting to see how many passengers rush to her defense...and others just watch like it's the floor show.

Bus passengers stopped a man who punched a blind woman in the face.

:wow:

9. In this case, ignorance is cowardice.
Show me ignorance. Douchebag walks on a bus, starts beating on a blind woman. For no reason.

The reaction of some of those "people", that's not ignorance. They bought in as far as I'm concerned.

10. Well, I was referring to the "DK, DC" - which I took to mean as "Don't Know, Don't Care"

and if I was mistaken, I apologize.

The fact of the matter is, though, that there is a documented social-psychological phenomenon called the Bystander Effect. In all likelihood, the people who were standing in the background weren't quaking in their boots thinking that they were going to get hurt by the fellow who attacked the blind woman. They were likely thinking that someone else was going to take initiative, or that the situation was not one that merited a response (i.e. this might be a 'Candid Camera' moment, or something like that). In fact, the research into it also points out that there is an inverse relationship between the number of bystanders present and the probability of helping behavior. On a crowded bus, there were tons of people present. I'm going to guess that if you took any one of the people who did nothing, and put them in a similar situation where they were the only person present, on average they would do something as opposed to nothing.

7. Some people would be too scared to jump in.
I mean, I would scream at the guy, but there's no way I would physically place myself in his path.

11. That's true. Some people are better at comforting after the fact, too.
I'm glad that some of the passengers came to the woman's rescue, but I'm not going to automatically put those who didn't down.

I once had a friend who was the opposite of me in situations like that.

We were at a company dinner once, and one of the attendees passed out at the table, due to a medical condition he had.

She practically leaped tall buildings in a single bound to get out of the room.

I practically leaped them to get over to the man.

Fortunately, the man's wife knew what to do, so really, neither my friend or I were necessary in the situation.

But she and I talked about it after things calmed down.

We were both caring people in our own way; it's just that our ways were different.
