Is there an online map thingy that will show me distances between locations?
I have a route I walk during the week through several neighborhoods and I am trying to figure out the distance. Maybe I just don't know how to use the googlemap?

1. Use Google Earth
click on the ruler icon at the top and draw your route.

4. enter the address you are leaving & enter the address you arrive at.
Googlemaps, Yahoomaps, etc. They will all give you what you are asking here.
Click on "get directions", then enter appropriate departure & arrival addresses.

5. Google maps -> get directions -> start address -> end address -> walking.
You can drag the line on the map to reflect the particular route you take. It will then tell you he exact time of transit and distance traveled right above the step-by-step directions.

It works! 1.8 miles one-way. I'm doing better than I thought. :bounce:

Thanks everyone!

on edit: that drag-on-route feature is exactly what I was looking for. :)

6. Community Walk
It lets you create walking maps and hook up with people to walk with and stuff.

8. Yes, Google Maps will do it
Put a location into Google Maps. Then look for the "Get Directions links - there should be one on the flag for the location and another in the bar above the map.

That will give you two boxes - one for the location already mapped and and another for the second location you want directions to. You can swap the two with the little curved double ended arrow to the right of the two boxes. The drop down menu underneath will let you chose "By Car," "By Public Transit," or "Walking." Then click "Get Directions."

What Google Maps does NOT do is let you adjust the exact route. It picks the shortest one.

9. apparently you can change it...
(at least under the "walking" choice it allows you to drag the route around. :)

11. Ah - I can't with driving - or maybe they upgraded it since I tried it
Google Maps seems to move my address around a bit so I don't use it much for directions from home. It used to put my home about five miles north of where we are. The last time I tried it for directions, they put me on a different road inside a subdivision that is three miles as the crow flies but about seven miles away by road.

And I don't use it for walking at all - I'm in a rural location that is not friendly to pedestrians even if my knees let me walk or hike - or horseback ride.

13. You can drag in "directions" mode in google
just let your mouse-pointer hover over the point in the route you want to drag , the words " drag to change route" appear. Click down and drag ( watch the route change as you move across the map) , then let go when you like...bingo , recalculated route.

Cheers
P
