Fundies gone wild in Oklahoma.......
via the American Family Assn's OneNewsNow, where people are probably doing backflips of joy over this news:

Okla. governor signs bill allowing Ten Commandments monument
Associated Press - 5/23/2009 4:10:00 AM

OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry has signed a bill to permit a Ten Commandments monument on the grounds of the state Capitol.

Henry took the action Monday, rejecting arguments that the display would be unconstitutional.

The bill's House sponsor says he'll use family funds to pay the $10,000 cost of the monument, which he insists will honor the historical rather than religious significance of the Ten Commandments.

The American Civil Liberties Union is considering challenging the measure.

1. "The American Civil Liberties Union is *considering* challenging the measure."
Considering challenging the measure?! Is Harry Reid the head of the ACLU now??!! :wtf:

Also of note: Henry is a Dem -- or at least he plays one on TV. :eyes:

And the current favorite to win the guv seat in 2010 is none other than Mary Fallin (R-insane). :puke:

As for the ACLU balking on taking the case, you really have to live here to appreciate how much an uphill battle they would have on their hands...I'd even say it'd be a lost cause. The entire state government and courts are stuffed with rightwing loonies, and even if the ACLU managed to climb up the federal courts with the suit, they still wouldn't very many sympathetic judges. Consider (except for Ginsburg and Breyer) the composition of the SCOTUS.

13. The Inquistion, let's begin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5McSEU48Y8

The Inquistion, look out sin
We have a mission to convert the Jews (Jew ja Jew ja Jew ja Jews)
We're gonna teach them wrong from right
We're gonna help them see the light
And make an offer that they can't refuse (that the Jews just can't

refuse)

Confess (confess, confess)
Don't be boring
Say yes (say yes, say yes)
Don't be dull

A fact
you're ignoring:
it's better to lose your skullcap than your skull

The Inquistion, what a show
The Inquistion, here we go
We know you're wishing
That we'd go away
But the Inquistion's here and it's here to stay
The Inquistion, oh boy
The Inquistion, what a joy
The Inquistion, oy oy

I was sitting in a temple
I was minding my own business
I was listening to a lovely Hebrew mass
Then these papus persons plunge in, and they throw me in a

dungeon, and they shove a red hot poker up my ass

Is that considerate?
Is that polite?
And not a tube of Preparation H in sight

I'm sitting, plicking chickens and I'm looking through the pickings

and suddenly these guys bring down my balls
I didn't even know them and they grabbed me by the scrotum and

they started playing ping pong with my balls

Oy, the agony
Ooh, the shame
To make my privates public for a game

The Inquistion, what a show
The Inquistion, here we go
We know you're wishing
That we'd go away
But the Inquistion's here and it's here to -

- Hey, Torquemada, whaddaya say?
I just got back from the auto-da-fé
Auto-da-fé, what's an auto-da-fé?
It's what you oughtn't to do but you do anyway

Skit skat voodely vat tootin de day

Will you convert?
No, no, no, no
Will you confess?
No, no, no, no
Will you revert?
No, no, no, no
Will you say yes?
No, no, no, no

Now I ask in a nice way, I said pretty please, I bent their ears,

now I'll work on their knees!

Hey, Torquemada, walk this way
We got a little game that you might wanna play
So pull that handle, try your luck
Who knows, Torq, you might win a buck!
Alright!

Put it in the car (in the car x2)

How we doing? Any converts today?
Not a one, nay, nay, nay
We've flattened their fingers
We branded their buns
Nothing is working
Send in the nuns!

The Inquistion, what a show
The Inquistion, here we go
We know you're wishing
That we'd go away
So, c'mon you Moslems and you Jews
We got big news for all of yous
You better change your point of views today
'Cause the Inquistion's here and it's here to stay

4. Fundamentalism is the CANCER of the body politic.
They never stop. They never WILL stop.
They cannot be reasoned with, placated, or bought off.

I have no solutions to the problem of fundamentalism;
the more I ponder it, the more I want to run amok with sharp objects.

One has to wonder how many of these dumb Oklahomans can even recite the ten commandments. They'd probably stumble to name one or two and look like idiots just like that congressman from Georgia on Colbert.

11. Fundamentalists have no respect whatsoever for the constitution or the rule of law
I hope the ACLU takes 'em to court and costs them all a LOT of money- because that's about the one and only thing that these types understand (short of jail/prison time).

No way that's constitutional unless he adds

plus monuments to every other religion...

14. Well thank Gawd!
Without this piece of rock, how will people in Oklahoma know not to murder or steal?

I say we lobby for a law requiring every FUNDY home to have a 1 tonne engraved stone on their front lawns (at their expense of course) to remind them to do things that the rest of us already have figured out without needing an invisible sky daddy saying so.

OF course I would have the rock be engraved with the constitution since they seem to have trouble with that as well.

WF happened to that place? I know it's the buckle of the bible belt and it always had more than its share of religious wack jobs, but I don't remember it being this sick.

to have their spiritual gold standard placed along side the commandments.

The shit will really hit the fan when those sci-fi cults start demanding space on public grounds.

When somebody sues to erect Darwin statue, heads will explode.

28. Instead of the ACLU,
i would pitch a chance for Americans United http://au.org instead. They're the watch group for all attempts to get religious shit passed through both states and federally. They probably already have, but I will meander over there after here and see if they have a heads up.

The other alternative would be to have the many other religious communities put in their two cents, and have a Star of David, a Qu'ran, a pentacle, a Happy Buddha, and as many other groups as possible protest and insist that their beliefs should be honored as well.

If this stuff isn't stopped now, they're only going to keep pushing the edge of the envelope until they win. I can't say I like the proposition of living in a racist, intolerant theocracy of the world of the fundies. None of us do, FWIW.
