Sonia Sotomayor--The Final Nail In the "Conservative" Coffin?
Hmmmm. What to do if you're a "conservative" who vowed to oppose this nomination no matter what?

How alienated would "conservatives" be from the fastest growing demographic if they go for it?

2. She's a Bush appointee, they won't bitch too much.
I don't expect a big battle over this appointment.

3. So much the better.
Where are their "values" now? Are they "compromising" with evil?

12. Elected officials may not squawk too much but Rushie & Sean
will be whining to high heaven. And since Rushie is the party leader it will put the party in a nice little pickle.

4. The Conservatives would do well to shut up and confirm her
because I have a sneaking suspicion she'll be Souter in reverse. Nothing to back it up, just a gut feeling.

She was, far and away, the least liberal of Obama's short list.

6. no, her record does not support that
and what decisions or comments make her "the least liberal on Obama's short list"?

7. I think she's pretty much a liberal
judge based on the opinions I've seen. Then again I sure haven't followed her too closely, did she do anything specific that I missed.

5. Clinton
She was a Clinton appointee in 1997, check out Wikipedia for her nomination and confirmation which the GOP held up for a year. By all accounts this appointment would be a wash. Even though Souter was appointed by Bush Sr., he turned out to be a liberal, by all accounts so is she, so nothing would change on the Court if she makes it.

9. Before that, however, she was nominated by Bush Sr
from wikipedia:

Sotomayor was nominated on November 27, 1991, by President George H. W. Bush to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York vacated by John M. Walker, Jr.. She became the youngest judge in the Southern District<13> and the first Hispanic federal judge anywhere in New York State.<14>

13. Presidents don't really choose district judges on ideology. She was recommended by a Dem.
Senator Moynihan, specifically. That's how district judges get picked.

8. Knowing Obama, he has likely already consulted top Republicans
to ensure a smooth confirmation. Part of Bush's problem was that Bush just tried to ram through appointments without consulting Democrats, which is generally considered a courtesy. Neither of Bill Clinton's nominees were challenged because Clinton consulted Republics beforehand.

11. He consulted them on the stimulus also. Gave them many treats
in that package. They still voted nearly 100% against.

10. She was made Federal Judge by Bush Sr....
The best hope is that she falls in the Souter category. Her opinions, the few I have gotten a summary of seem very middle of the road. However, at the Appellate level no real wiggle room exists. I am inclined to like this pick, there are far worse out there.

But for the far left I think she, like Obama will be disappointing. Obama has shown that his approach to the Constitution and law are decidedly pragmatic, bordering on outright conservative, he and Sotomayor have known each other for quite some time so there must be a lot of agreement on fundamentals.

Anything more about her would be the wildest speculation, no one can predict with certainty what a person will do, or become, once seated on the SupCt.
