Sotomayor pick...Chess or Ju-Jitsu???
Edited on Tue May-26-09 10:04 AM by Boxerfan
Either way it is brilliant in many ways but lets focus on the tactical aspect of this pick.

What are the 2 key constituents the Republicans need to gain support in?. Just to stand a chance of gaining political ground?. Women & Hispanics.

Now watch the RW machine gnash & gnaw on Sotomayor. The public is more aware than ever before of the angry petulant side of Republicans. They will see a degradation & defamation unlike they have witnessed . And this time its not a person they can victimize. Her strength & character will shine through nicely I'm sure.

And the Republicans will have soiled themselves-again.

And to the key demographic the need so dearly.

Friggin genius if I do say so myself. Re-directing your opponents energy to your advantage is Ju-Jitsu tactic if I remember correct. No matter if I got that right-it's still plain to see they have no chance when President Obama gets his game on.

1. Right! No Chance!
'She also once said at a conference that a “court of appeals is where policy is made,” a statement that has drawn criticism from conservatives who saw it as a sign of judicial activism. Judge Sotomayor seemed to understand at the time that she was making a controversial statement, adding that “I know this is on tape and I should never say that because we don’t make law.”

Conservatives quickly pointed to such statements after word of her selection on Tuesday.

“Judge Sotomayor is a liberal activist of the first order who thinks her own personal political agenda is more important than the law as written,” said Wendy E. Long, counsel to the Judicial Confirmation Network, an activist group. “She thinks that judges should dictate policy and that one’s sex, race, and ethnicity ought to affect the decisions one renders from the bench.”

White House officials concluded that such statements, while perhaps providing fodder for opponents, would not be problematic enough to hinder her confirmation. Some officials have said in recent days that they relish the prospect of Republicans standing up against a Hispanic woman with her life story because it would only damage the G.O.P. in a key voting bloc.'

2. I think it's an upfront acknowledgement that the court needs to look like AMERICA.
We need more female representation and a person of Spanish language heritage has been WAY the hell overdue.

The fact that Bush Senior set her on the path to this appointment is kinda ju-jitsuish, certainly. The fact that she's Puerto Rican and not Mexican (none of that "Was yer deddy illegal?" stuff that the right took such umbrage about when it came to Gonzales) certainly shuts down another avenue of whining.

4. Obama Passes a Test
in the good sense. She will not move the court to the right - phew. She ruled badly on a school freedom of expression case, but for the most part she fits what we liberals want:
-very confirmable (first placed on US Dist bench by Ole Man Bush, then promoted by Clinton) female hispanic - what can the goopers do about her?
-SEEMS slightly left of center - but better than some more conservative possibilities
-FINALLY, not another Geiger etc.

Only time will tell - and she is a bit old at 54 - but on balance, we did good by electing Obama, at least on the judicial front - it seems.

5. What Aristotle and Socrates had to say about law and judges

Aristotle said that the Athenian statesman Solon wrote his famous Code in obscure language so that many lawsuits would result, and thus give the State ample opportunity to exercise and increase its authority over the citizens through frequent frequent adjudication.

Socrates said: "Four things belong to a judge; to HEAR courteously; to ANSWER wisely; to consider soberly; and to decide impartially."

7. I believe that when your enemy
has decided to shoot themselves in a tender and irreplaceable part of the anatomy,
that is the moment to hand them a sawed off 12ga.

Not chess, as much as giving them the solution to their shame... a tanto with the blade wrapped in gozo.

When they attack her, they will succeed in their death wish.
This will make 1965 seem like a par-tay!
Ask Gov. Wallace how well it worked to try another regional splinter party.
That is where you are right now, pugs--
poised on the crest of ruinous decisions, like a person about to commit suicide by cop.

8. I just hope she is psychologically prepared for all the attacks that are
going to come her way - even though SHE is not the actual target. Every attack on her is actually an attack on Obama.
