Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins on Judge Sotomayor
(If we can hold the Democratic caucus together and get Maine's two moderate female senators to support Judge Sotomayor, then there is more than enough to avoid a filibuster. I expect other republicans will also support her in the end)

Indisputably, this is an historic selection, as Sonia Sotomayor is just the third woman to be nominated to The Court and the first Hispanic American. I commend President Obama for nominating a well-qualified woman, as I urged him to do during a one-on-one meeting on a variety of issues in the Oval Office earlier this month.

“I also appreciate that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel called me personally this morning to inform me of the President's selection. As the process moves forward, I will apply the same standards of review that I have in the past — that any Supreme Court nominee should bring a balanced approach to cases, possess a strong intellect and suitable judicial temperament, and follow a disciplined judicial methodology in reaching decisions. Justices on the High Court sit for life, so the Senate must exercise this constitutional duty thoughtfully, and give careful and thorough consideration to Judge Sotomayor, as it should to every nominee. I share the view that the proper role of the judiciary is one of interpreting the Constitution and acts of Congress, not legislating from the bench. As such, I will carefully evaluate Sonia Sotomayor’s record and temperament in making my determination.” Olympia Snowe

A key moderate Republican, Sen. Susan Collins of Maine , signaled Tuesday that she's open to confirming Sotomayor, citing her "compelling life story and long record of judicial service."

3. Ha! So true.
I personally wish it were Miers on there and not the one who got in... oh well, no one wants to remember that Miers character.

5. Miers would have been another Thomas
Alito has to be marginally better.

22. Miers was not qualified but i wish she had ended up on the court
i really don't think she would have been able to handle it and would have stepped down in time for Obama to replace her.

6. That cartoon doesn't hold up under critical analysis
Technically the apple and trees labeles should be switched since the "fruit" desired is the Hispanic vote, rather than the nomination of Sotomayor being a natural outgrowth of the tree of Latino votes.
But the idea of one elephant manning a two man saw makes the point well enough. Whatever the task, Republicans ain't up to it.

Of course the Republicans are going to implement their planned/staged protest, but in the end, she will have the votes, and will be duly seated.

On edit: oops!

10. snowe and collins were members of the gang of 14 -- they're not going to support a filibuster
Edited on Wed May-27-09 04:56 PM by onenote
Even if they decided to vote against her confirmation (which I doubt) they won't support a filibuster, just as every one of the Democratic members of the Gang of 14 voted for cloture on Alito, even though all but two (byrd and nelson) then turned around and voted against his confirmation.

In fact, it will be interesting to see what McCain does if there is a cloture vote. He also was a member of the gang of 14 and he is a "maverick-y" guy, right? Plus, he's up for re-election in 2010 in a state with a growing Hispanic population.

15. i think he'll vote for her
when he realizes she'll get the nomination anyway.

He'll probably have some long winded, pointless statement that includes a caveat, though...
