Sarah Palin Wears Mini Skirt to Memorial Day Ceremony
Alaskans Honor Dead As Palin Pulls Diva Card

By Shannyn Moore

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/shannyn-moore/alaskans-honor-dead-as-pa_b_207986.html

In January, I spoke with a member of the Alaska Joint Armed Services Committee. He was really excited about the Memorial Day commemoration being planned; The Decoration of Honor Ceremony. Alaska is only the second state to have such a service, and I was honored to be invited.

snip

It was a beautiful ceremony, appreciated by the families -- touched to even be remembered after so many years, even decades for some. Many had traveled from all over the country to be recognized.

Despite several months of notice, the governor didn't commit to be at the ceremony until the morning of the event-hence her conspicuous absence in the program. Before the program went to the printers, the governor had been given a deadline. Silence. Perhaps she was waiting for Greta's call. Governor Palin insisted she be sat on stage and demanded time for a speech. She spoke before the invocation and flag presentation as to not be "off program." It was certainly appropriate for the governor to speak at such a high level ceremony, but her high level maintenance made it difficult for those that planned it.

I talked to a Republican lawmaker earlier today and told her how honored I felt to be there. She commented on the governor's attire. The most somber occasion I have attended, and the governor wore a mini skirt. Neat. Way to comfort the families of fallen soldiers; give them tickets to the "bare legs show." One side of the auditorium was waiting for the"Basic Instinct" shot, Alaska style.

Even Sarah Palin, in full diva regalia, couldn't ruin the day. She just looked cheap.

I don't see a mini. What I see in the photo kind of looks like her skirt is right above the knee? Though it is so dark I really can't tell. Help me here?

Edit: Never mind. I was looking at the speaker but hadn't bothered to look at her face. Sarah is sitting. And yep, there's a lot of leg showing, not that it matters all that much to me, as long as she keeps her legs closed.

99. I don't usually comment on stuff like this,
but...

Not only did her decorum leading up to the event (i.e. noncommittal to attend), and not only did here physical appearance enhance her cheapness, but her legs are suffering from de-sexification due to age. Bony knees, ugly flesh. I hate commenting on SP, but, DAMN!

But again, his policies are far more egregious and worth attacking. Also the comparison between Cheney, who I consider pretty close to evil personified, and Palin, the bumbler, is flawed.

Edited on Thu May-28-09 10:33 AM by jberryhill
My response was directed to the perception that observations over whether attire is appropriate to an event is applied to men and women, and is not unique to Palin.

Here's is one of many examples:

Randi talking about the Cheney "Parka Photo" right now!

When people, male or female, wear clothing that is greatly divergent from the cultural norm for an event it will cause notice and hence, discussion.

Levels of evil are not germane.

86. Poor people wear clothing that can be greatly divergent
from the norm. Shall we attack them for it?

It is not about what they (Cheney, Palin, Bush, whoever) wear. It is about what they say and what they do. Attacking people for the clothes they wear is silly and shallow.

93. A Person Quite Capable Of Wearing Event-Appropriate Attire Shows Disrespect By Not Doing So

Palin and Cheney are not ragamuffins with an empty closet.

Another point of comparison - the Bush "cowboy boots with the US Flag on them" which I believe he gave as a gift to a Chinese leader.

Nobody here is going to twitter over someone who is financially disadvantaged having limited clothing options. But we are here talking about people acting in their professional representative capacity, and quite capable of conveying an image other than disrespect.

Their clothing doesn't meet your standards. Your reasoning is that what people wear is more important than what they do or, by extension, what they are; since "are" is the result of "do".

107. Where would you get this from what I said?

"Your reasoning is that what people wear is more important than what they do or, by extension, what they are"

How is that at all any kind of rational conclusion based on anything I said?

I did not say clothes are "more important" than what they do, are, or anything else.

If an elected official shows up at a state funeral wearing a thong and flip flops, you'd think it was just fine since, after all, they showed up. Is that correct?

But if the thong and flip flops would raise your eyebrows, then we are not discussing a matter of principle, but a subjective line drawing exercise.

Yes, the skirt ends above the knee but it's hardly a micro mini. I'm no fan of the governor and the game she played concerning her attendance but Ms. Moore's assessment of her attire at this ceremony is just plain catty.

57. I believe HuffPo has been publishing many stories
by Shannyn Moore related to Sarah's "real" failures as governor, of which there are many. As I said, this particular piece may be a bit catty, but it underscores the governor's consistent lack of good common sense. A Memorial Day service should have been a somber event, not an opportunity for the governor to show off her legs. That's just my opinion -- and Shannyn's.

with a Limbaugh/Hannity-like fixation on the marginally relevant.

Palin was exposed as a light-weight nutjob last year and she has no future on the national stage. She may be news in Alaska, but in the other 49 states the weird obsession with her antics is a lame Two Minutes Hate.

37. Absolutely, a woman's skirt is shorter when seated. And Palin knows that. She has to.
I still think the skirt was inappropriate to the venue. To me, it's not about the skirt, as I've been known to wear my fair share of mini skirts. It's rather, for me and speaking only for myself, more about Palin's consistant inappropriatness and her insistance in using her looks and not her brains. She thinks so little of herself that all she has is her "hotness" to get anywhere. Yes, she is beautiful. But it's sad to me that this is all she thinks she is. She actually thinks she can *wink* herself into history. She's the anti-feminist, and yet, claims to be a feminist.

40. Consider: she's wearing a mini in ALASKA.
Alaska, the state where it snows in the middle of July. The state where moose and beavers wander the state capitol. The state where the ice never leaves the ground.

I know that women can tolerate cold better than men, but she obviously had to move her legs around to wear a miniskirt, or otherwise her legs would freeze and crack off.

This is a clear attempt to prove she's tough enough to be President in 2012. That, and shooting the wolves from planes. She's going for a Teddy Roosevelt image, but I think it's the Fur-Trimmed Teddy with Heels that she's doing.

103. actually, this is a different event on a different day
The event referenced in the HuffPost piece occurred on Saturday May 23. It was a Decoration of Honor Ceremony. The photos you've posted are from an event held on Memorial Day itself, May 25.

That being said, the photos posted from the May 23 event don't seem to show what I would call a "mini skirt".

Edited on Thu May-28-09 04:21 AM by RFKHumphreyObama
The fashionistas on TV, the radio and the Internet would be all over this, often in the guise of political commentary. You'd get a hundred quotes from media talkiing heads and the like saying how it was inappropriate, offensive, not becoming of a Governor/First Lady and so on

But she's a Republican so that's OK for the MSM

73. Did she use a teleprompter?! (Does HuffPo have an editor to stop stupid articles?)
Edited on Thu May-28-09 07:09 AM by JackRiddler
The only thing embarrassing here is that a writer would mark themselves as a zero writing ZERO about zeroes. But probably HuffPo doesn't pay for this stuff, so nobody cares enough to do her a favor and stop this article, right?

PS - Gasp! A skirt slightly shorter than what I think is appropriate! Worn by someone I hate! Remind me again, who's supposed to be part of the "American Taliban"? Palin, or her gossip columnist "critics"? (Actually this fails to rise to the level of a gossip column.)

Then again, it's only garnered 1 rec. DU lives?
