Remember this spring’s “Bachelor” drama, when alleged “nice guy” Jason Mesnick jilted poor Melissa Rycroft in front of a national TV audience? Well, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
The red-headed all-American comic book character Archie Andrews, who has somehow managed to maintain a three-way romance (chaste, of course) for the better part of a century, is dumping the wholesome girl-next-door Betty Cooper for the tempestuous, wealthy, brunette beauty Veronica Lodge.
This is according to The Globe and Mail’s Web site, which says Archie will propose to “Ronnie” in a jewelry store — as a crushed Betty and addled sidekick Jughead look on in disbelief — in the July issue of the comic.
Entertainment Weekly’s PopWatch blogger Sean Smith offered this assessment:
“What the hell is Archie thinking? Seriously, he can’t possibly afford Veronica’s lifestyle on that temp-worker income of his, and she’s going to make his life miserable. He’ll always be falling short of her expectations. Betty, meanwhile, loved Archie just as he is. The lad is making a foolish, foolish error, and he’s clearly thinking with the wrong part of his anatomy.”
But after 67 years, who can blame him?
