Its official: Bing is Microsoft's new search engine
SEATTLE -Microsoft Corp. is rolling out a redesigned search site in the coming days and hopes it will lure more Web surfers than the two most recent incarnations, Live Search and MSN Search.

The new site, Bing, adds touches intended to make everyday Web searching a little less haphazard. Bing also tries to make it easier for people to buy things, book travel and find credible health information.

History has not been kind to even the best search innovators. Many companies, including Amazon.com Inc. and IAC/InterActiveCorp., and startups like Hakia, ChaCha and Cuil have tried to improve on the basic "10 blue links" format of search results, but Google has so far been unstoppable.

3. The problem with Live search is that the results sucked.
I tried to use it many times, but always ended up going back to Google. Their filtering routines were awful.

4. I'm pretty happy with Google
I was shocked recently when I was going over some web analytics for the non-profit I work for. Of the search enginges used to located our web site, Google had something like 62% of the references. No other search tool or web portal had more than 15% or the share.

6. it will happen, at some point, just like IBM's massive
lead and absolute control over the PC world might evapo . . . . wait. Where is IBM these days? How's their laptop business doing?

seriously, MS's huge lead on software and operating systems is beginning to shake, rattle and groan. GM's huge lead in domestic cars sales is over. Wonder bread, once a staple of bad food everywhere in the states, is wondering how to survive. Google will be dethroned, probably when a far more artificially intelligent system is designed, created, offered to Google, who will tell them to go pound sand, after which, they go public and destroy Google in the process.

11. Da da bing, da da bang, da da boom.
I looks a lot like google with a different style applied to it. To be useful will depend on how well it indexes the web, how fast it is, and if they give all API's google does. I don't like MS because of their business practices, if they extend their philosophies to this then it will fail also. Who wants a search engine that ignores things because MS doesn't like them - I search for linux (no hits).

13. I've always longed for a way to buy stuff easier on the Web
You know, I can't can't count the number of times I've asked, "Yes, that's some nice stuff, but where can I go to buy it?"

Thanks, Microsoft.
