Secrecy is a tool, it serves the purpose of keeping the many from seeing things they would not allow. And so is Complexity. If you can't hide what you did, make it seem so complicated that people can not find an answer, hide it in a wrap of delusion, you can keep it secret.
Here is an example
The Bush administration authorized torture, yep they did. There is no way to deny it.
85% of society, and the laws around the globe, have said torture is wrong.
The Bush Administration should be tried for war crimes.
That is really simple, there is no argument, there is no way to say what they did is just, it is logical to have trials, and it is justice.
But there are people, and thoughts that can't handle it, they want to claim some are above the law, because those few can create problems. What does this mean? It does not mean Bush did not torture, it means people don't want to face the facts and ramifications of having an accountability of a former official. They know it would create other issues.
The Bush administration tortured, but that is not what some people are thinking, they are thinking that it would make America look bad, they are thinking spin might make them lose there power, because some would not want to accept it. They are thinking that you can't mess with power. They may be scared, they may want to just ignore it.
But it does not change the simplicity of it. Bush committed war crimes, war crimes are illegal, nobody is above the law. Argue against that. They can't. So instead it is about it would create a turmoil, it would be tough, it would let people know what we did.
Well we did it, as Americans, we allowed it, and if we do nothing about it, we continue to allow it.
I understand why they do not want to set things right. It is because people are insane and delusional. When the right wing radio guy said water boarding is torture, people created in their head a delusion that said it was a hoax. Instead of being able to believe that our own government might have done the same thing many other people in history have done, they created any delusion to deny it. They literally can not accept the truth. Note that this is why people were shown the suffering of the Holocaust. Because people do not want to believe their own government could do such things. This is another reason the international community is important, if we in America are to insane or weak or in so much self denial to accept what happened, we need someone to make us realize what we did, to try and keep it from being allowed again.
Water boarding was done as torture in the Spanish inquisition Water boarding was done to Americans by Japan and Korea and it was called torture, and prosecuted. The Stress positions and humiliation techniques used are documented.
But when a person says it is torture, people can not accept it, because they can not face the truth of what happened. They can not face that people they campaigned for, or supported, or are fellow Americans did something that is a war crime. So in there mind they make up every complex excuse, and delusional reason, to divert their thinking, because they can not face it.
This is the absurdity of complexity, make it more then a simple concept. In my view, that simple concept is that "We are better then that". And we should make that clear. But people can choose to make it a complex equation including unrealistic hypotheticals, or redefinitions of terms, or some vague idea of what is needed. Maybe they can cure what happened by discussing ticking time bombs, or 9/11, or that it is just enhanced methods.
Avoid the simple truth. American leaders instituted wide scale torture in Gitmo and Abu Ghrabi, and it was approved knowing it was a violation of international law.
If you do not support prosecuting Bush, then quit the BS and say you believe Torture should not be a war crime, say that you believe anything goes, say it like you believe it. Defend the tyrannies of the past, defend suffering if it keeps your precious little world seem to be safer under your fear, but quit this stupid discussion. Face what you are, and face what you believe.
And more importantly, make your statement that you should be held in account for. I believe peoples eyes are open, stop the BS about willful ignorance.
And one more thing, it is not just about drowning people, it is about abuse, humiliation, fear, pain, suffering, hopelessness, and depravity. And weather that is the world we want to live in. It is not a world I accept, it is not a world I chose to live in, and it is a thing I will stand against. It can not be allowed to be legal.
Take your side, sell your integrity if it is to hard to make a stand. Accept the brutalization in your name if it is politically inconvenient, but don't think for a minute you have what I would think of as integrity or right on your side, because you are accepting wrong if you accept torture, or if you deny that it happened, or if you say it is not illegal.
