Did you know: It's "a B.S. excuse that you don't have time to work out"?
Edited on Sun May-31-09 06:49 PM by Mike 03
I just heard this on a radio program over the internet.

And this one: "A lack of motivation to exercise is no excuse."

Is this true?

This infuriated me, and I will tell you why. Some people are fortunate enough to have leisure time to pursue physical activities and interests. But we all know there are people who don't have that opportunity. They work two or three jobs. They are raising kids. They have been laid off and are so depressed they can't move.

Nobody disagrees that eating healthfully and exercising are positive behaviors, but while I think it is important to let people know these facts are true and helpful, I think this is the wrong time to be chastising people for not doing these things.

If you are working three jobs, raising three kids, do you need the added stress of hearing that you are an irresponsible, unhealthy person because you can't work an hour of exercise into your day?

Don't get me wrong, I love exercising and it is a major part of my life. What disgusts me is hearing constant judgment against people with enormous responsibilities being chastised for not meeting the ideal when it comes to weight, exercise and the ideal.

All I'm saying: It's not the right time to be beating up on overweight or obese people.

Oh, and on edit, add this: You all eat jelly donuts.

1. Yes, we know. Obese people are completely and utterly powerless to change their weight...
They're apparently the most powerless people ever born - to hear DUers tell the story.

4. Of course they could, but I don't understand why you care
I suspect it is not about " money in the healthcare system", but it is just aesthetics. I think some, mostly male,
just don't like looking at fatties.

7. Other than the implicit claim of people's abject powerlessness, I don't especially.

15. Are you ever empathetic? To anyone?
You always seem to be singing the same song. Lighten up a little, smell some flowers.

Here's a hug. No charge.

3. It is BS
I work 14 hours days sometimes. Tell me when I am supposed to work out. Otherwise the exercise and weight Nazis can all go fuck themselves.

We are lazy fat slobs who "let ourselves go" (or some other BS). :sarcasm:

16. Watch any TV? do pushups until the commercial break ends...
usually it is 2 minutes but sometimes they are three. kinda makes it interesting when they throw a curve ball and you have to do an extra minute.

An hour of TV have 18 minutes of commercials. Watch 4 hours of TV in 1 week? Thats time to do an hour of exercise per week.

Now if you work 14 hours in 1 day I would try it on a different day. If you work =14*5=70 every single week well it likely doesn't matter. That kind of work load long term is rough.

6. Why should people feel the optimism necessary to exercise in the first place?
What with society, or what's left of it, starting to crumble?

People are also going back for more education - for fields that'll likely get offshored anyway...

Without 8 hours of sleep per day, that adds up to peoples' detriment as well...

Or apathy...

Many reasons; most of which have little to do with having a diet of jelly donuts...

8. IMO the issue is not just "work out" but includes all things that help one improve his/her
health.

There will be some that for many reasons are not able to improve their health including controlling weight but those people in no way excuse others from taking personal responsibility for improving their health.

10. I do 15 minutes of push-ups and sit-ups every other day..
and sometimes I'll bounce and roll on an exercise ball for an hour. Cardio is taken care of during dog walks.

I think pretty much anyone can find 15 minutes here and there for some simple exercise.

13. I saw a cool t-shirt about this once.
When I was still able to run which I loved to do.

It had an image of a highway with deep perspective disappearing into the horizon.

Under the image were the words - "My health club".

14. You can do something though.
one night: walk around the blook (15 minutes)
next night: 5 sets of pushups for 2 minutes at a time = 6 minutes
next night: 3 sets of crunches for 3 minutes = 9 minutes.

Do that twice a week with one slack day and you racked up an hour of exercise in a week with no equipment required.

Everyone can do something. Sad thing at work the same people who say they don't have the time are taking the elevator. We are on the 3rd floor. Take the stairs it takes 2 minutes and you burned something.
