DISgusting: Student Head Butts, Spits On Teacher
Why do we allow such little monsters in our schools anyway? And isn't 12 a little old for 5th grade?

BOSTON -- A 12-year-old Brookline student was accused of assaulting two teachers after an educator said the student was caught fooling around with a classmate in school.

The charged student broke free, punched one teacher, spat in her hair, head-butter her on her back and kicked her in the legs, Wicked Local reported.

The student was restrained, but broke free and assaulted a second teacher, the district told police.

1. Unfortunately
Unfortunately, this doesn't seem like such an exceptional event to me. We see this often in my district's schools.

I've had 13 year-olds in my fifth grade classes.

2. Why do we allow them? Because we are required to.
Even after we remove them, we're still responsible for their education, unless they're actually expelled, and even THEN we're required to offer services.

If he's Emotionally Disturbed, we often place them in a Day Treatment center that costs us $40,000 per year. We are reimbursed at about 43% of that.

It will almost certainly be determined that his actions are a result of his handicapping condition, and therefore he cannot be expelled, period. (OK, OK, yes they changed the law to allow it, supposedly, but I've NEVER seen it happen. Ever.)

3. I used to work in a boys group home. Kids were violent like this all the time.

That is why you were taught how to properly restrain them. And how to pin them to the floor so they couldn't hurt themselves or anyone else when they got like that. For a strong 12 year old boy there were two of us.
Of course, they were no longer in the regular public schools. Many of the kids I worked with had been taken away from their parents so of course they were lashing out.
Kids that act like this still in public school, I don't have direct experience with. I wonder how much longer they would stay in a regular school.

5. I taught daycare in the 80s. A four year old boy hit, punched, scratched, and kicked me.
The director had his mothe come in. She defended his actions, saying that my race (white) aggravated him and it was all right. I asked the director what was the policy concerning teacher abuse. I never received an answer.

6. I'm assuming that this is a "Special Needs" student with behavior problems.
