I wanted to talk about the American University date rape controversy. For those of you who have not heard, recently a male student wrote an article in the school newspaper in which he claimed any woman who goes to a party, drinks, and walks to a guys room is "indicating" that she wants something to happen. CBS News allowed the guy and a female student from American University to appear on their morning show to discuss this issue. In my opinion the guy used faulty logic throughout his appearance on The Early Show.
In order to defend his statement he claimed that many men are wrongly accused of rape each year. He also brought up the Duke Lacrosse case. I do not think either the Duke Lacrosse case or the fact that many men are wrongly accused of rape have anything to do with his article or the fact that he said a woman was "indicating" she wanted something to happen. After that he brought up the fact that he was gay and then said in a perfect world he would be able to walk down any street in Mississippi holding a man's hand. Once again I do not think that has anything to do with what he said.
In my opinion it is dape rape if a woman is drunk. In my opinion being drunk prevents one from being able to deny consent. If anyone, male or female, is put in a position, even if it can be said they put themselves in that positition, it is date rape. I do think women should avoid getting drunk at parties, but if they do that does not give any man the right to have sex with her. If a woman is drunk men should just not have sex with the woman.
