Criticizing General Things is Not Criticizing Individuals

Criticizing an increase in obesity in this country is not bashing fat people.
Criticizing Ann Coulter and Michele Bachmann is not anti woman.
Criticizing fundamentalist Christians is not Christian-bashing.
Criticizing The Roman Catholic Church's actions is not Catholic-bashing.

The Converse is true, as well

Condemning Muslim Terrorists is not condemning Islam.
Criticizing Jerry Falwell is not bashing Christianity.
Criticizing a loud obnoxious athiest is not criticizing atheism.
Criticizing a Jewish rabbi who molested children is not anti-semitic.

1. Depends on the context and wording.

It would be better (in my opinion) for all of us if criticism were always well-worded and objectively framed, but that's not the reality. Hence, criticism of Ann Coulter often is peppered with transphobic or anti-woman bullshit, criticism of the Catholic Church is often framed as "Catholics," and criticism of Rush Limbaugh very often mentions his weight.

Many times, general criticisms are taken personally by people who take offence where none was offered.
