South African white supremacist leader Eugene Terreblanche has been killed on his farm
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-428006?hpt=Mid

Mr Terreblanche, 69, was beaten to death after a dispute over unpaid wages, local media reports said. Two people are said to have been arrested.

Mr Terreblanche, who campaigned for a separate white homeland, came to prominence in the early 1980s.

He became the champion of a tiny minority determined to stop the process that was bringing apartheid to an end.

"Mr Terreblanche's body was found on the bed with facial and head injuries," AFP news agency quoted a police spokesman as saying.

"He was hacked to death while he was taking a nap," a family friend in the town of Ventersdorp was quoted as telling Reuters news agency.

1. Mr. "White Earth", huh? I'm guessing THAT'S the reason someone tagged his racist ass.
Good riddance...

3. "You reap what you say".

The right wing in the country were/are about as bad as the KKK here. Simply frightening and very authoritarian.

One of the comments:

"I will never forget hearing - and seeing - Terre'blanche speak in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. I went along to see what all the fuss was about, and found a scene straight out of a Nazi propaganda movie, with enormous banners bearing the AWB swastika, and jack-booted 'soldiers' standing to either side of the podium. When Terre'blanche started speaking, the audience reacted strongly and it took me a moment before I realised they weren't jeering at him, as I expected, but were eating out of the palm of his hand! Of course the AWB were a political throwback, but there were plenty of white South Africans who supported his brand of xenophobia. Thank God he fell off that damn horse, or he may actually have influenced our political landscape, instead of simply adding colour to it."

13. First of all, bullshit to your whole smug fucking "argument."
You trot out some wild ass logic in which, because I bemoan the celebration of a man being hacked to death in his sleep I automatically assume his beliefs? You wanna connect those dots for me, Einstein?

Question: Does gaining some joy from a human being being hacked to death prove you love human beings?

Give me a fucking break.

8. Conviction and prison sentence
Edited on Sat Apr-03-10 07:44 PM by tabatha

"On June 17, 1997, Terre'Blanche was sentenced to six years in prison for assaulting a petrol station worker and the attempted murder of a security guard."

"But he had been in relative obscurity since his release in 2004 after a prison sentence for beating a black man nearly to death."

16. Yes it is, and now that we've established that it can be okay to do this...
we can now feel free to debate each case on it's own merits rather than just make a blanket statement that this sort of thing is wrong. The last thing we would want to do is make a broad brush statement that hacking someone to death in their sleep is wrong. :sarcasm:

If someone had done the same to the leaders of the German Nazis in 1923 or so, I think it would have also been cause for celebration.

23. Perhaps.
Indeed, I oppose the death penalty for most offenses for which it currently applies. But for fascist criminals attempting to incite genocide, I think some should be executed to make an example and to terrorize the would-be fascists.

46. That sort of moral relativism is unhelpful.
There is indeed such a thing as right and wrong. The fascists are wrong, whereas the antifascists are right. Pacifism is ultimately morally bankrupt though pacifists can play a positive role with the right leadership. There is just violence and unjust violence.

25. No because whilst hindsight might well be 20-20, foresight most definitely is not.
Taking a machette to an obscure nobody is assault/murder pure and simple.

THE ONLY JUSTIFICATION for killing another human being is an immediate and palpable threat to one's own safety or the safety of others.

29. This was not an "obscure nobody."
He was the leader of a fascist movement that was responsible for great crimes. AWB was a Nazi group that had infiltrated the state power of apartheid and was quite influential. AWB and its kindred groups still pose a threat to the ongoing national democratic revolution led by the ANC and its allies.

Due process is for all. Not just those who share your ideologies.

Way, way too often, and increasingly moreso, the only discernible difference between a number of people here and over at FR is the quality of the spelling, and WHO it is, they think should be lined up against the wall and summarily shot.

44. I would have preferred a trial.
I definitely prefer that laws be implemented to criminalize fascist politics and that the main culprits be prosecuted according to law. That does not mean, however, that I mourn the extralegal annihilation of such people. In the liberation struggle, informers and spies were necklaced and it wasn't ideal, but it helped pave the way for freedom.

white supremacists/nazis get universal hate, that's why they changed the bad guys to make it palatable.

it's kewl to celebrate their being hacked to death, even.

I think that's how the old saying goes.

I get your point about celebrating someone being hacked to death, but Terreblanche was no sweetheart. Given the immense assistance he was to sustain a movement that resulted in nearly incalculable repressions and deaths, I'll just say some hackings are less tragic than others.

42. It's that moral relativism thing. If WE think the guy deserved to be hacked to death then it's okay.
Edited on Sat Apr-03-10 11:25 PM by scarletwoman
Because hacking a human being to death in his sleep is only bad when it's a *good* kind of human being being hacked to death.

It's kind of silly, when you come right down to it, to have laws against hacking people to death, when some people so clearly deserve it.

On the other hand, one might wonder who gets to decide who deserves it. However, I see by some of the responses in this thread that such a question doesn't unduly bother some DUers.

Just in case it's not clear, I'm totally with you.

Capital punishment is perfectly fine, so long as the punished is white and demonstrably racist. And in that special circumstance, we need not be concerned with the distinction between capital punishment and murder.
