"One of the first big pieces of the federal health-care overhaul to take effect is the creation by late June of temporary high-risk insurance pools for people who can't get affordable coverage because of a pre-existing condition"

1. The problem is how much this high risk pool will cost. Nobody seems to know.

2. It is hard for me to believe that they would allow price gouging on a group of people who
cannot get insurance

3. It's not a matter of price gouging, it's a matter of the funds they have available
and those funds aren't very large, in fact they will run out in about a year. And if it's anything like the various states high risk pools they won't be cheap by any stretch of the imagination.

6. I hear you, but if they can spend trillions on wars and the financial bailout, it seems they could
throw some to help people here

8. I have lived in this country long enough to know that wars always come first.
I mean what you say is common sense to everyone but our government.

4. It's not hard for me to believe
not at all. The current insurance industry does business with no humanity, and knows that many of these people have jobs so that wealth transfer is still a possibility.

The robber barons of the rails said "All the traffic will bear" with the mandate their modern counterparts have the government to help them ensure that the traffic bears a lot more.

5. But this wont be ran by insurance companies as far as I know, it will be administarted by government
but I think the pricing will still be unaffordable for many.

7. Then why won't they be more specific?
They keep saying 'affordable' and the point is, if one is going to present this as a great thing, the price must come with that presentation. There are many things in the world I think are fantastic, but I can not afford to buy them. Others say 'come to Maui with us, it is so cheap right now' and I have to point out that cheap is relative. Affordable?
Anytime words are in a place that should contain numbers, watch your wallet, read the fine print. How much is it? It's affordable!

10. Regulations & details need to be determined by the agency that will adminster them.
I don't know which agency - if it even exists yet - will make these cost calculations and estimate how many will likely be enrolling.

This is not something that can be specified in the law itself.

Better to wait for an accurate answer than get an inaccurate guess now.

9. actually, that doesn't even look good on paper
since it's not going to do anything to control costs, other than "pooling" which is a scam.

And it's really not a solution at all if it effectively prices people out of a policy.

Enrollees in the state's two existing high-risk pools, both offered under the Illinois Comprehensive Health Insurance Plan (ICHIP), shoulder two-thirds of the cost, which translates to "cost-prohibitive" annual premiums of $12,000 to $16,000, McRaith said.
