Hilda Solis statement on the death of 25 workers at W.Va. mine

WASHINGTON, April 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis issued the following statement on the death of 25 miners yesterday at the Upper Big Branch South Mine in Whitesville, W.Va.:

"As we hear of more heartbreak from Whitesville, our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, loved ones, neighbors and coworkers. Twenty-five hardworking men died needlessly in a mine yesterday. I pledge that their deaths will not be in vain.

"The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration will investigate this tragedy, and take action. Miners should never have to sacrifice their lives for their livelihood."

1. That's very nice that she made a statement.

More than Bush admin officials ever did.

But what is she going to DO to make life better for Appalachians?

I understand why national politicians don't work that area much - it's too sparsely populated to yield a lot of votes, and the weird throwback religion is pretty deeply entrenched...

(News fact: most of the REAL old-school Pentecostal Holiness snakehandlers I knew as a kid didn't vote at all. They weren't Republicans. They did not believe in treating any temporal government as important at all.)
