U.S. job openings, hirings slip in February
by Rex Nutting

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. employers had fewer job openings and hired fewer workers in February than in January, the Labor Department reported Tuesday. Job openings declined to 2.72 million from 2.85 million on a seasonally adjusted basis. With 14.9 million unemployed people in February, there were 5.5 potential applicants for each job opening, up from 5.2 in January. The level of hiring slipped slightly to 3.96 million in February from 4.09 million in January. Total separations fell to 3.96 million from 4.12 million. Separations had run much higher than hires for most of the past two years, but the gap has closed, signifying a possible turning point in the labor market.

This is why we need to treat this situation as a national emergency. Trying to go back to the good ol' days of bubble economics funded by the Federal Reserve's easy money policy ain't gonna work.

1. It's brutal out there and employers are
being extremely picky. My husband was laid off at the end of January and was told by one perspective employer, "You are 99% what we are looking for but I'm going to hold out for 100." The company's loss because you couldn't ask for a better, smarter, more qualified worker. In the meantime he's taken on a small consulting job and is being stiffed on the pay.

Anyone who argues the job situation is turning around isn't looking for a job.
