In an attempt to fend off the toughest challenge of his Senate career, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has unwittingly thrown his opponent fodder to use against him.

"I never considered myself a maverick," he told Newsweek's David Margolick in interview.

McCain's primary challenger, former Republican congressman and tea party favorite J.D. Hayworth, pounced on the quote, describing it as a disingenuous attempt to curry favor with conservatives, who have long distrusted McCain for breaking with the GOP on issues such as tax cuts and campaign finance.

"If memory serves, his campaign plane was called 'Maverick One,' and, as I understand it, in national campaigns they spend a lot of time on that stuff," Hayworth told Politico's Andy Barr.

"You’re seeing a lot of scrambling and a lot of position reversals and panicked and shrill attacks against me," he continued. "To the extent that he can encourage amnesia in the electorate, that’s what he’s aiming to do."

2. I don't like McNut, but I dislike JD even more! John should
have known better than to say something so easily proven wrong!

3. Any Republican who doesn't follow lockstep will have his throat cut by the GOP.
McCain has to say that right now.
Republicans have decided they must stick together like lemmings.

4. If it's his best shot, it's a pretty good one
It's like John Sidney McCain III threw a looping overhand right, leaving himself completely vulnerable to the counterpunch. Even a meathead like Hayworth could take advantage of that one. What's next for John - disavowing any knowledge of the savings and loan collapse?

5. In that sense, yes, it's a good shot, but...
...it's a good shot based on a lack of substance. For me, going after something like the "bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb bomb Iran" remark is an attack on McCain's politics, while going after the "maverick" thing is an attack on his senility...which I guess is still a "good" attack from Hayworth's perspective, but...

6. I gotta be honest here, I'd MUCH rather have McCain as a Rep than this ass-clown
Hopefully a Dem will win the seat but I hope no one is rooting for Hayworth over McCain.

9. If the Dems can't beat Hayworth and his corruption record
The they can't ever win in that state. I wonder if McCain goes all Mavericky and becomes a Dem just to * on his party if he loses this primary. Fun, fun.
