"If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." Here are my wishes - what do you think?
I'm copying my post from this thread: If You Had One Wish, Just One....What Would That Wish Be For

This is my reply:

"You have one wish. What do you want?"

Me: "More wishes."

"Okay. How many?"

Me: "Here's my list:
  1. An immediate end to corporate personhood with an immediate return to the original conception of corporate charters.

  2. A complete re-purposing of the "Defense" Department to actual defense only. No more funding of offense activities. Sole purpose of standing army and military spending confined to protection within our borders.

  3. Outlawing of all private interest lobbyist groups. Lobbying confined to citizen advocates only.

  4. Return of all FDR era financial regulations, expanded and updated where necessary.

  5. A massive government program of infrastructure rebuilding and employment based on the models of the WPA and CCC.

  6. A progressive tax on UNEARNED income -- all of it. Same tax rate applied to capital gains as is applied to income tax.

  7. A tax and/or fee on all stock transactions. Every trade, every bet.

  8. Make all obscure financial "products" and manipulations illegal. No more credit default swaps, no more bundled securities, no more derivatives, no more short selling.

  9. A return of strict usary laws -- no interest charges allowed above a set base level. 8% should be good enough.

  10. Outlaw the propagation of empirically false information by public media outlets. Opinion is free, but facts are facts.

  11. Strict regulation of media ownership with vigorous anti-trust enforcement. Community-generated local media must be protected.

  12. Universal single payer health care.

  13. Heavy tax penalties on U.S. companies who outsource.

  14. All international trade agreements must impose labor and environmental standards commesurate with U.S. standards. Products produced by violators not allowed to be imported into the U.S.

  15. Return of tariffs to protect U.S. industry and agriculture.

  16. An end to subsidies for Big Agribusiness. Agricultural subsidies/loans available to genuine family farms only.

  17. An FDA completely divorced from Big Pharma. R&D done at public universities subsidized, for which any private company must pay a hefty fee for access. Subsequent profits must be shared with the universities from which the research was obtained.

  18. Outlaw all pharmaceutical ads in the media. Full disclosure by all medical organizations of any collaberation with pharmaceutical companies.

  19. An end to the 401K scam. If you want to play the stock market, fine, just don't call it "saving" for retirement. Institute a government run defined pension plan for all workers, paid into by all employers by assessing a fee based on a defined percentage of each employer's payroll.

  20. Institute laws and policies that favor domestic production of finished, value-added products out of domestic resources -- thus creating jobs and local industry -- and discourage the export of raw resources -- i.e. no more cutting down forests to export logs that end up as pressed pulp produced in another country.

  21. An end to ALL "privatizing profits and socializing risks/costs" by ALL corporate entities. If you pollute, you pay. If you screw up, you pay. If you won't pay, your corporation is dissolved and your individual officers are each assessed for their share of the damages or face prison time and garnishment of all personal assets.

  22. Outlawing of all "SLAP" lawsuits.

    "Is that all?"

Me: "No. That's just what I came up with off the top of my head. I reserve the right to continue to add to my list of wishes."

    sw

I'd most like to see additions to my list. I expect, of course, criticisms of it. Have at it.

5. I'd love to see
advances in education. I'm not advocating complete Frenchy Socialism here per se, but full funding and a return of arts, music, and physical education is a good start. Let's also throw competitive teacher salaries in there while we're at it.

I'm always around, but quiet. Tell me: do you see a lot of threads you want to post in these days? :hi:

9. Oh yes - what you said about education!
"...full funding and a return of arts, music, and physical education..."

A return of LIBERAL ARTS education! It's funny, I went to Catholic school up to 8th grade. It was the most wonderful, well-rounded education that anyone could have. We were taught everything about the "Classics" -- ancient Greek mythology and philosophy and such, ancient history, art history, literature, architecture, astronomy, mathematics... In short, the entire canon of the art and science of western civilization.

Even when I went to public school I had art and music classes. I was able to mount a show of my drawings and paintings, sing in choir, and perform in stage plays; all part of the standard curriculum.

Education these days seems to be about nothing more than turning out obedient drones who won't question anything. :(

23. Thank you! I totally agree -- families taking care of people with chronic illnesses should
have support. No question! Do we value human life or not?

Families that are taking care of their own are relieving the State of that responsibility. The State should compensate them.

I was just trying to think of all the things that I think are wrong, and what I'd like to do to correct those wrongs.

Any move in the direction of correcting any of those wrongs would no doubt have profound effects throughout the system.

I think we've gotten stuck in pointing out what's wrong, but not articulating how we'd like to change what's wrong into something else.

25. The only reservation I have about your list is this.
No more funding of offensive activity by U.S. Military. Suppose we do have on good authority and intelligence activity, that a country is eminently planning SLBM attack on U.S. city or cities and it is discovered that a preemptive strike could splash the mission against the U.S. Would you authorize preemptive strike monies at that time?

26. I'm not familiar with your acronym. What is "SLBM"?
It seems to me that the possibility of a "COUNTRY" -- i.e. a Sovereign State with a National government sanctioning such an attack -- attacking the continental U.S. is extremely unlikely.

That there will be non-state actors seeking to do us harm is probably a given, but such isolated threats from relatively small groups do not merit the expenditure of our treasure to maintain a global military presence, imho.

Great list.
I would add:

*The immediate break-up (Trust Busting) of everything "Too Big to Fail".

*Fair Competition Legislation that lets Mom&Pop (small locally owned businesses and farms) compete with Big Box and Factory Farms on a level playing field.

*An end to the two-tiered Judicial System

*Prosecution of rich American War Criminals and War Profiteers. (Oh yes they did!)

*Strictly Enforced Publicly Financed Elections (severe penalties for criminals)

*Transparent and Verifiable elections (Why isn't this a front burner issue with the Democratic Party?)

*Re-Regulation with strict oversight of Banking/Investment, Transportation, Communications, Trade, Energy, Utilities.

*NO Public Money for private Prisons, armed Private Police, armed Defense Contractors, private intelligence agencies, or For Profit Health Insurance Corporations.

*Immediate Civil Rights and Equal Protection for ALL. (No Exceptions)

*Free Quality Universal Education to everyone who wants it.

*Strong Social Safety Net and Consumer Protections.

*An end to The Patriot Act and a return to The Constitution.(especially Habeas and privacy protections)

*A refutation of the "Unitary Executive", and legislation to ensure it NEVER happens again.

*An END to Republican/Corporate influence INSIDE The Democratic Party !
(NO! They DON"T deserve a seat at the table!)

We should get together and vote for each other!

57. No more private for profit prisons.
No more selling of weapons (missiles, tanks, planes, etc.) to other countries.

62. Those are EXCELLENT additions! I heartily agree!
Thank you so much! I'm saving this thread and I'm going to compile and organize all the ideas into one piece. Maybe write up a "Ninety-five Theses" ala Martin Luther and nail it to the Democratic Party's door.

Glad to see you as always, Swampy! :hi:

78. Thank you. Yes, you're right -- it's highly unlikely that any of these "wishes" will come true.
On the other hand, I think the act of articulating these "wishes" is a valuable exercise -- it focuses our minds and helps us to see more clearly what we have to fight against.

Imho, of course.

Thank you for your post,
sw

66. You realize, of course....

that full implementation of your "wish list" would result in the crippling if not demise of capitalism and it's muscular servant, imperialism.

I could live with that, as could the rest of the planet.

67. I like it, with some changes of course.
I'd disagree with 17 entirely. I'd heavily subsidize pharmaceutical research at public universities, and give it away for free. It would be much like Open Source software, and every human being on the planet (and other animals too!) would see the benefits of research that resulted in inexpensive and effective drugs.

76. I appreciate your take on this issue, thank you.

My original thoughts regarding #17 were about how to get more revenue to our public universities, who have been suffering from decreasing funding by the states over the years. However, your point is well-taken and I'm glad you brought it up.

Thanks again,
sw

68. Excellent! All of it. And would only add
an end to the absurdity of "self-investigating" agency mechanisms that inevitably and endlessly lead to self-exonerations of all wrong-doing.

69. i would add: an absolute end to secrecy in gov't esp. in foreign affairs.
i would dismantle the cia, nsa, etc. if we need "intelligence" we get it non-subversively and with the intention of peaceful coexistence.

all gov't functions should be conducted out in the open. no secrets.

the people must know EXACTLY what is going on. how else can we make reasonable decisions?

81. Thank you. Actually, I'm more inclined to think that those entities should be utterly dismantled.
They are proponents of, and true believers in, global capitalism. I think we need entirely new organizations based on the principle of People before Profit.

Thanks again for your post!

83. Really good list, question for you
Hope its not a duplicate, in your # 19 you ask for "Institute a government run defined pension plan for all workers, paid into by all employers by assessing a fee based on a defined percentage of each employer's payroll." isn't this social security? or what its supposed to be?

Anyway, keep adding, like a lot of the suggestions, and K&R...

85. Thank you for the question. Here's my quickie explanation:
I was differentiating this "pension" plan from Social Security in that it's only assessed on employers. We, the workers all pay into Social Security -- it's deducted from our paychecks.

I do appreciate your questioning of this point and it definitely merits more thought.

Thank you again,
sw

I must admit that I'm reluctant to let this thread go, there have been some really great additions to the original list made by many of the respondents.

As I said in my reply to Swamp Rat above, I'm going to compile all the suggestions into a master list that I will post in the near future.
