Olbermann: Gov. Jindal ‘blackmailed or bribed’ his attorney general

By David Edwards and Daniel Tencer
Wednesday, April 7th, 2010 -- 11:12 am

MSNBC's Keith Olbermann on Tuesday named Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal "the worst person in the world" over claims the Republican governor "blackmailed or bribed" his Democratic attorney general into joining a multi-state lawsuit challenging the health care overhaul.

Noting that Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell is now "debasing himself" by joining the lawsuit, Olbermann pointed to an article in Eunice Today that alleges Caldwell didn't want to be the "token Democrat" joining the lawsuit but was "backed into a corner" by Jindal.

The Attorney General said the decision was made more out of the necessity of saving jobs in his agency than any real hope—or desire—of overturning the health care law.

One employee said Caldwell, in a candid admission, claimed that a deal was made with Jindal. Under terms of that agreement, the governor would not make additional cuts in the attorney general’s budget if Caldwell joined in the litigation. Caldwell agreed to be the “token Democrat,” he said, so that he might save additional job cuts by an administration whose state goal is to reduce the number of state employees by as much as 5,000 per year over three years.

"In other words, Governor Jindal either blackmailed Attorney General Caldwell or bribed him," Olbermann said. "'Support this moronic, pathetic, partisan, legally flimsy lawsuit on behalf of the insurance companies or we'll fire your employees.'"

Personall I think Caldwell should run for Bobby Jindal's job. Seems Caldwell not only wants to make sure the folks from Louisianna have health insurance but he wants to save their jobs too.

1. Oh, that's nice: blackmail.
What a great way to govern.

NOT.

I agree with you: Caldwell should run for Jindal's job. I think he'd make a much better governor.

2. And this point some dog-doo I stepped in this weekend would make a better governor than Bobby Jindal
The guy is just horrible and obviously doesn't give a rats ass about the people living in his state. To actually threatened the jobs of innocent people just to make a political stance is total bull and should be the highlight of any democrat that runs against Jindal.

The only reason Jindal is even governor is the from the total mess created by Bush after hurricane Katrina. Bush did all he could to make the governor look inneffective and she gave up after one term. Jindal's time is soon coming to an end. Perhaps with a democratic governor and Obama in the White House - we might finally get New Orleans restored & protected like it should have been instead of this 6 year blame game.

3. I agree completely with all your points!
Jindal must go. Far far away, preferably.

Ugh.

5. Extortion, Blackmail - whatever you want to call it - yep, it's illegal
And it's bad enough he wants to cut 5000 state jobs but to threaten a group of state employees simply because their boss disagrees with them - something is just majorly wrong with taht!

6. Wouldn't most people consider it stupid to try and strongarm
someone that could launch investigations against you?

7. I think the fact that Caldwell has gone public with this is the first step
it should get interesting!

8. Eunice Today is breaking major statewide stories now?
That's Eunice, La., a town in Acadiana of about 12,000.

Meanwhile, the NOLA Times-Picayune (or as I used to call it, "the cat box liner"), Baton Rouge Advocate, etc., all somehow missed this -- or sat on it. :tinfoilhat:
