I'm buying guns. Lots of guns.
Not to protect me from the government but to protect me from the crazy right wing nutz who buy guns to protect themselves from the government.

Funny how that goes full circle, huh?

Not really, I'm buying very old guns to pass on to my grandchildren when they come of age if they're interested. It' a cool thing.

2. Good plan/investment. Buy wisely and you'll recoup your investment.
For every rifle you buy... buy a case of ammo to keep with it.

12. Most firearms depreciate. ...
I have to assume from his post that the OP is going after that small fraction that has already retained its value.

20. Depreciate?
Thats totally wrong. I bought my AR-15 about 7-8 years ago for 700.00 now its worth 1500.00-1700.00, same with my AK-47 clone, all my firearms are worth a hell of a lot more now than when I purchased them

25. A few things. ...
First, the price for "black guns" is artificially high right now because sales are high due to worries that they might not be available for too much longer. Even so, I doubt that a used AR is now twice or more the value of a new one unless you have added a lot of pricey aftermarket accessories.

Second, I'm assuming that when people buy guns it is to shoot them and not to simply leave them in the safe under a coating of oil. Yeah, an unfired blued Colt Python from the 1970s is worth a shitload. That is an extremely rare, sought after item.

Finally, guns are never worth as much as people think. Looking at retail prices or blue book values is not the same as actually selling one. Selling on consignment or to a gun show dealer will lower the cost further because that dealer will expect to turn a profit on it as a used gun.

So I stand by my statement that guns depreciate with a few sought-after exceptions.

13. Progressives take advantage of the market. Guys trading in quality bolt rifles
to buy overpriced ar pattern rifles.

Be sure to add a wilson combat supergrade to the list. Best 1911 ever made.

4. I bought my first gun at age 37 a week after Dubya was "reelected."
This county went 60-40 for Dumbass. I was concerned that if my neighbors decided to round up the ter'rist-lovin', god-hatin' libruls, I wouldn't have anything beyond foul language as a response.

10. Four years. "Re-elected"
No, I was a fool to prepare for something that didn't happen. That's why I'm cancelling my accident insurance and cutting the seatbelts out of my car.

Are you suggesting such a thing is impossible? I think the plutocrats and their Fundy allies have more control here than the brownshirts did in Germany on Crystal Night.

Expenses are not investments. As far as expenses went, it was pretty modest.

16. Sure. My hobby's astronomy. In fairness to the OP he concluded by saying...
...he was actually buying some antiques for investment value. I doubt he is going to shoot them. I have a few myself, but I shoot them at the target range for amusement. In Ohio, astronomy can't be ones only hobby because the weather sucks so bad. I have a pistol for home defense, but it is with the understanding that a home invasion will probably never happen. (Plus, fun to shoot at paper targets.) I'm much more concerned that the fire extinguisher is fresh and accessible. One never knows with an old house.

19. you would if your family
was attacked.

had been attacked in Sooooo many different ways.

I am an American, of Dominican descent, born in NYC. I went from Manhattan, to Queens, to Dominican Republic to North Carolina.

I thought the civil war ended in the late 1800's......not so

I was ignorant/stupid.....

My formal welcome to the genteel south was ...."Are you a Yankee?".....I was too naive to want to really absorb the meaning of that..and responded, "No, I'm a Mets fans"...HAHA.

People who YOU think are as AMERICAN as YOU....see you as an enemy.

My brother is a Vietnam vet, my nephew an Iraqi war vet...not counting the countless others in my family who have served, but didn't go war.

So don't think the right wing wackos who Palin tells to reload....don't understand the message.

Just select gun models that are popular and you can always raid your neighbors' homes for more ammo.

a single barrel 12 ga Iver Johnson shotgun made in 1923, a solid old Vulcan double 12 Ga made around 1905 and a very nice H&R revolver from 1915.

... owning firearms is a good idea, owning ammo even better.

I don't think it will ever be hard to get a gun in America, but I can easily see a time when getting bullets will be very hard.

32. Just to clarify . . .
What I'm buying isn't much good for "defense" against the rabid right or anybody else. I'd need a day or so notice that they're coming and at least a quarter mile distance to start my "defense".

They are all "shooters" and will make small holes very close together in paper targets at a hundred yards or so.

I just think it will be cool to pass on a device engineered in the late 19th century, built in the early years of the 20th century and still functioning to the original specs. How cool is it to use something that is a hundred years old and still working like new?

Investment? Naaa, just interesting stuff that, with the bayonet attached, brings home the reality of what war is all about.

36. They're actually not a bad investment.
A few years ago I bought a Saiga 20 ga. semi automatic for around $225.00 out the door. The last time I checked on Gunbroker.com it was going for somewhere around $775.00 to $825.00.
I also bought a CETME .308 battle rifle for $350.00 and now it's selling for around $750.00.

If only my 401K was as profitable.
