Why did Michelle Bachmann say Swine Flu started during the Carter Administration?
I know it's a crazy statement. But what on earth was she alluding to?

1. For many, many mouth-breathing Republicans...
anything bad that occurred in the 70s was Jimmy Carter's fault. Nice, easy way to forget all about the terrible problems under Nixon and Ford.

3. my guess
is that in her twisted little mind that means that democrats are responsible for swine flu. but mostly because she's crazy. that made me laugh. what's not so funny is that a substantial number of people actually believe her drivel.

23. Right. Turds exist for a valid reason.
Bachmann does not.

6. Did she pull that one out again? Late last fall she made a comment about how it was only under
Democrats that swine flu ran rampant, the last breakout being during Jimmy Carter. She said it was an "interesting coincidence." Only it was actually Ford who was president during the outbreak she was thinking about.

Oh wait, my bad. I said "thinking."

...we elect a Democrat.

For the record, the 70's outbreak of "Swine Flu" occurred during the administration of Gerald Ford and not Jimmy Carter. I'm old enough to remember the publicity photos of Ford receiving his swine flu shot.

And Michele is old enough to remember it, too. She was a college sophomore that year.

10. It was the Ford Administration, not the Carter Administration - right? Swine flu started in Feb.
1976; Carter wasn't inaugurated until January 1977.

11. Umm . . it was the Ford Administration

Not that it matters . . other than to highlight her complete disconnect from reality.

On February 5, 1976, in the United States an army recruit at Fort Dix said he felt tired and weak. He died the next day and four of his fellow soldiers were later hospitalized. Two weeks after his death, health officials announced that the cause of death was a new strain of swine flu. The strain, a variant of H1N1, is known as A/New Jersey/1976 (H1N1). It was detected only from January 19 to February 9 and did not spread beyond Fort Dix.<26>

This new strain appeared to be closely related to the strain involved in the 1918 flu pandemic. Moreover, the ensuing increased surveillance uncovered another strain in circulation in the U.S.: A/Victoria/75 (H3N2) spread simultaneously, also caused illness, and persisted until March.<26> Alarmed public-health officials decided action must be taken to head off another major pandemic, and urged President Gerald Ford that every person in the U.S. be vaccinated for the disease.<27>

The vaccination program was plagued by delays and public relations problems.<28> On October 1, 1976, immunizations began and three senior citizens died soon after receiving their injections. This resulted in a media outcry that linked these deaths to the immunizations, despite the lack of any proof that the vaccine was the cause. According to science writer Patrick Di Justo, however, by the time the truth was known—that the deaths were not proven to be related to the vaccine—it was too late. "The government had long feared mass panic about swine flu—now they feared mass panic about the swine flu vaccinations." This became a strong setback to the program.

21. LMAO.. The Carter administration? Um.. excuse me MS Bachmann but that was
the FORD administration that was in power when the 70's swine flu broke out. But I'm sure you'll look it up and get back to us... kinda like Ann Coulter did when she claimed that Canada was not involved in Viet Nam and got called on it. I think that dude is still waiting for her to get back to him...
