Save the whales -- Keep the ban on whaling

The Obama administration is considering a deal to allow some commercial whaling to resume – even while some species of whales are still struggling to survive.

2. The current ban is more than porous. Its also voluntary and unenforceable
Taking the approach of a commercial allotment with a declining quota may be more effective. Lets not reject another approach out of hand since it may end up being more effective. Lets see where it goes before we start protesting.

6. Dancing on the edge of a nasty double edged sword.
I understand the rationale for "allowing" whaling to resume in a smaller capacity. It's sets the Antarctic aside, and forces the Japanese (and others) to whale in their local and northern oceans...which they really can't do because of the mercury levels in the meat of those animals, which folks won't eat. Aha! Yeah, not really. For this to work, we'd have to be idiots and assume that the Japanese wouldn't just thumb their nose at any new rules as they have the old rules. For far too long, the Japanese whalers have given zero consideration to any rules. But then, why should they? Who will enforce these new rules? Nobody officially enforced the old rules. If not for Sea Shepherd, nobody would have done shit about it.

Rules are only worthwhile if they will be followed, with enforcement and penalties to follow if those rules are broken.

Let me know when that's going to happen.

Until then, I'd rather spend my money and energy supporting an organization doing something rather some cockamamie halfwits making decisions that they can't/won't back up.

May all commercial whaling vessels meet the Hvalur 6 and 7 in Hell.
