Democratic House Speaker Joe Hackney said Democrats intend to portray Republicans this fall as the do-nothing party that is unwilling to govern.
Speaking at the Orange County Democratic Convention in Hillsborough on Saturday, Hackney said legislative Democrats made all the tough decisions during the recession in cutting the budget from $21.4 billion to $19 billion annually, Rob Christensen reports.
"If the Republicans won't cut, they won't tax, they won't govern," Hackney told about 150 people at a senior center.
Hackney said Democrats had negotiated a severe recession while preserving education and they now had a story to tell. He said the Republicans had emerged as the party of "no."
"Let's take it to the polls and see if 'no, no, no' is what they want," Hackney said.
