Rachel Maddow's 4/12 Moment of Geek: Moment of Fail?
Did anyone else watching TRMS tonight notice that her show got the Chinese and Nepalese estimates of Mt. Everest's height wrong - by 9,000 feet?!?

Anyone happen to get a still picture of the graphics Kent Jones was standing in front of?

1. I thought she kept saying 20,000 instead of 29,000.

Then when she didn't correct it, I thought it was just me!

:)

3. Me too
I was thinking, "No way! We're talking about using the sea level as baseline, right?"

Granted, there are a few seafloor mountains that, if measured from their base, would dwarf Mt. Everest - I think Mauna Kea in Hawaii is the reigning champ in terms of absolute height. But Everest is still the closest mountain to the great beyond, and at a whopping 29,035 feet above sea level (and growing), I don't think it's in much danger of losing that distinction soon.

5. Well that would meam the error was over 9000 feet
And as we all know, over 9000 is pure unadulterated win.

8. I did - Moment of Eek!
Rachel handled it well. Good on her.

I appreciated learning about Chimborazo in Ecuador as well. I first learned about Chimborazo when I was a kid, but I think this is the first time I've heard about it since elementary school.
