Internet reports coming in of meteor explosion over Effingham Co, Illinois ...
Edited on Wed Apr-14-10 11:10 PM by Subdivisions
Anyone in Illinois on this yet?

Here's the local scanner link:

http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?action=wp&feedId=2916

UPDATE: Scanner traffic indicates meteor seen breaking up by airplane pilots and FAA.

Just heard one locality calling meteor incident all-clear... Other localities still investigating... Eff Co EOC was activated... Police joking about Klingons... Cop joking that he'll be there if he doesn't run into any aliens on the way over...

It sounds as if the incident has been cleared and they've moved on to other things...

Time for you meteorite hunters to go out and see what you can find. :D

3. wonder if any security cameras got images, or was it too high up?
There were two or three recent events (past few months) in the west where SOMETHING really lit up sky, and lots of surveillance cameras caught them.

Are we orbiting through some debris or is the rest of the galaxy throwing rocks at us?

EASTERN IOWA — If you were outside enjoying the weather Wednesday night, you might have spotted a cosmic light show streak across the Iowa sky.

17. Kinda, but that was more like this:

The War of the Worlds

COLUMBIA BROADCASTING SYSTEM
ORSON WELLES AND MERCURY THEATRE ON THE AIR
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1938
8:00 TO 9:00 P.M.

ANNOUNCER: The Columbia Broadcasting System and its affiliated stations present Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre on the Air in The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells.

(MUSIC: MERCURY THEATRE MUSICAL THEME)

ANNOUNCER: Ladies and gentlemen: the director of the Mercury Theatre and star of these broadcasts, Orson Welles . . .

ORSON WELLES: We know now that in the early years of the twentieth century this world was being watched closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own. We know now that as human beings busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinized and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinize the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacence people went to and fro over the earth about their little affairs, serene in the assurance of their dominion over this small spinning fragment of solar driftwood which by chance or design man has inherited out of the dark mystery of Time and Space. Yet across an immense ethereal gulf, minds that to our minds as ours are to the beasts in the jungle, intellects vast, cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. In the thirty-ninth year of the twentieth century came the great disillusionment.
It was near the end of October. Business was better. The war scare was over. More men were back at work. Sales were picking up. On this particular evening, October 30, the Crosley service estimated that thirty-two million people were listening in on radios.

ANNOUNCER: . . .for the next twenty-four hours not much change in temperature. A slight atmospheric disturbance of undetermined origin is reported over Nova Scotia, causing a low pressure area to move down rather rapidly over the northeastern states, bringing a forecast of rain, accompanied by winds of light gale force. Maximum temperature 66; minimum 48. This weather report comes to you from the Government Weather Bureau. . . . We now take you to the Meridian Room in the Hotel Park Plaza in downtown New York, where you will be entertained by the music of Ramón Raquello and his orchestra.

(MUSIC: SPANISH THEME SONG . . . FADES)

ANNOUNCER THREE: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. From the Meridian Room in the Park Plaza in New York City, we bring you the music of Ramón Raquello and his orchestra. With a touch of the Spanish. Ramón Raquello leads off with "La Cumparsita."

(PIECE STARTS PLAYING)

ANNOUNCER TWO: Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt our program of dance music to bring you a special bulletin from the Intercontinental Radio News. At twenty minutes before eight, central time, Professor Farrell of the Mount Jennings Observatory, Chicago, Illinois, reports observing several explosions of incandescent gas, occurring at regular intervals on the planet Mars. The spectroscope indicates the gas to be hydrogen and moving towards the earth with enormous velocity. Professor Pierson of the Observatory at Princeton confirms Farrell's observation, and describes the phenomenon as (quote) like a jet of blue flame shot from a gun (unquote). We now return you to the music of Ramón Raquello, playing for you in the Meridian Room of the Park Plaza Hotel, situated in downtown New York.

(MUSIC PLAYS FOR A FEW MOMENTS UNTIL PIECE ENDS . . . SOUND OF APPLAUSE)

ANNOUNCER THREE: Now a tune that never loses favor, the ever-popular "Star Dust." Ramón Raquello and his orchestra . . .

(MUSIC)

ANNOUNCER TWO: Ladies and gentlemen, following on the news given in our bulletin a moment ago, the Government Meteorological Bureau has requested the large observatories of the country to keep an astronomical watch on any further disturbances occurring on the planet Mars. Due to the unusual nature of this occurrence, we have arranged an interview with noted astronomer. Professor Pierson, who will give us his views on the event. in a few moments we will take you to the Princeton Observatory at Princeton, New Jersey. We return you until then to the music of Ramón Raquello and his orchestra.

(MUSIC . . .)

...snip...

10. Madison, Wisconsin - PICTURE
Madison Meteor?
Posted: Apr 14, 2010 11:29 PM EDT

MADISON (WKOW) -- Something it up the sky in the Madison area Wednesday night, the question is - what was it? Dozens of people called the 27 Newsroom shortly after 10:00 PM to report a bright light in the sky. Calls came in from all over south central Wisconsin, and from as far away as St. Louis.

Sharon Wisniewski, spokesperson for the Dane County Regional Airport, confirms pilots on two aircrafts witnessed what looked like a bright meteor in the sky. They believe it burned out. One pilot was flying a helicopter, the other a plane.

Ken in Madison said the sky "Lit up just like daylight" and then it was gone. Tara in Oregon told us she saw a bright green light come from the west before disappearing in the southeast. Rhonda in Fitchburg said something lit up the large windows in her home, and within moments, it was gone. Cheryl in Dodgeville says she saw a bright flash of light and then her house rumbled. Callers in Livingston and Clyde Township claim they not only saw the light, they felt an impact. People in as far away as Westfield report seeing the light, and questioned whether it was a plane in trouble.

27 News Chief Meteorologist Bob Lindmeier says it is possible a large meteor passed through the area, but it's hard to know exactly what caused the bright light. "Most meteors never reach the ground." He said. "They typically disintegrate in the atmosphere." Lindmeier says the disintegration could cause a rumbling sound.

Meteorite crashes into clock tower

Ray Cleaver | 1st April 2010

A flaming meteorite smacked into Stratford’s clock tower yesterday afternoon, setting it ablaze and knocking the top half off the building. A small crowd taking photos of the glockenspiel in action were unhurt by the explosion, and most of the visitors took great photographs, although the figure of Romeo was decapitated during an impassioned part of his speech to Juliet.

American visitor to Taranaki, Hiram Glinge was amazed when the meteorite hit. “I first thought it was a very realistic part of the glockenspiel action, though I struggled to recall the fire action during the balcony scene. But when my Hawaiian shirt began to smoulder I became a little worried. The darned thing bounced right off Romeo’s head and created a big crater on the middle of the road and Mary-Lou was so excited she nearly fell in,” he said. “I’ve never seen a tourist attraction like it. The whole tower eventually burned to the ground and although Mary-Lou and I clapped vigorously after the flames died, some of the locals did not seem so impressed.

Meteorologists say the chances of a flaming meteor hitting the clock tower are 18 million to one and chances of a Romeo decapitation are even higher. Workmen began re-building the tower late yesterday and the work is expected to be completed by lunchtime today.

For more information on this story please check out the date on today’s paper.

Here it says that this shower starts on April 16th... Kinda close to that today.
