On This Day

On April 15, 1912, the British luxury liner Titanic sank in the North Atlantic off Newfoundland, less than three hours after striking an iceberg. About 1,500 people died.

Years ago, I was acquainted with a great-grandchild of Ida and Isidor Strauss, the couple portrayed in dramatizations as the one in which the wife died rather than leave her husband behind. (The Strausses were the founders of Macys.)

It is also the day that Mr. Lincoln died.
