America Must Boycott Arizona

Arizona is the Alabama of the new century and Maricopa County is the new Selma. America and the world should boycott GOP Governor Jan Brewer's red state.

While the Arizona struggles with budget deficits it's legislature has decided to legalize racial profiling in a effort to arrest and deport undocumented families. While Arizona has been a hotspot in the immigration debate for some time the lightning rod has been Joe Arpio the publicity starved Sheriff who is under federal investigation for civil rights violations. This week the Arizona state legislature has trumped Arpio by giving local police a statewide mandate to pull people over based on the color of their skin or their facial features.

While we hear Glenn Beck and his cult members rhetorically worry about fascism and socialism coming to America via the White House it appears as if the Arizona State House has actually hit a real police state milestone. Even leading law enforcement figures in the state are openly rejecting the provision that will allow police officers to pull over anyone suspected of being undocumented. When Arizona residents or tourists are pulled over they must present their "papers" or be arrested. Arizona residents and tourists now have something in common with occupied France of the 1940's.

Arizona GOP Governor Jan Brewer is ready to sign the bill passed by Republican legislative majorities. The unwelcome mat is out for anyone brown in hue. American must reject this and the world must join in.

The only way we can pressure the Arizona legislature to it's senses is to embark on a boycott of the "Grand Canyon State".

The world can also join the boycott effort and be quite effective. Arizona is wildly dependent on producing world exports. Ironically its largest world customer is Mexico and its second is that hot bed of socialized medicine - Canada. Both of those countries should join Americans from every state in the union and boycott Arizona.

7. Sucks to be a Puerto Rican in Phoenix...
Does this bill now mean that I can be stopped and harrassed by law enforcement simply because I LOOK like I might be from south of the border. Am I now a second class citizen in the country I honorably served? I can't take this racist fucking hysteria the country is in right now.

2. Economic pressure got AZ to budge on the MLK Holiday issue
Time to put on the pressure again.

This latest legislative crap should be called the Sheriff Joe Enabling Act too.

10. Actually, in US history, it always was the South. Most western battle of Civil War was there
Just between Tucson and Phoenix, at Picacho Peak, Union and Confederate forces clashed. It gets reenacted every year.

http://azstateparks.com/Parks/PIPE/index.html

Cattle was being brought into the South via that route. Union army knew it was a big hole in the embargo. The South was about starved out and the cattle coming in were of tactical importance.

Lots of Confederates settled in Arizona. It surprised me how many third and fourth generation Arizona (white) natives speak with a southern drawl. Did some reading.... Oh, that explains a lot of things. What AZ became was a new haven for the privileged class looking for really cheap labor. The rich and loathsome found some naive, pissed off descendents of people used to getting away with a lot of civil rights abuse they could snooker into being tools to maintain privilege for the top.

4. Not me----boycotts cause job losses and things are tough enough
as they are now.

The people of Arizona will solve this on their own.

6. Required Documentation?
Does anyone know what documentation will be required to avoid problems while visiting AZ. Will a passport be OK or will birth certificates be required?

8. Birth certificates seem not to be enough proof for those who hate color.
No proof will be enough to prevent abuse of civil rights with the crap going on in AZ. Just spend dollars elsewhere, and be sure to tell the AZ Chamber of Commerce why they won't see you spending there. ;)

9. The articles I've read previously re the sheriff of Maricopa County
spelled his name "Joe Arpaio" - would a spell check or editor catch such a thing in the article posted in the OP?
