Mine Workers President Roberts: Massey’s Blankenship Should Be Jailed

by Mike Hall, Apr 14, 2010

Mine Workers (UMWA) President Cecil Roberts says that Massey Energy Co.’s continued inaction on safety violations at its Upper Big Branch Mine, where 29 West Virginia coal miners died in an April 5 explosion, should send Massey CEO Donald Blankenship to jail.

In a speech at the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO convention yesterday, Roberts said, “If there is any justice in America,”

U.S. Marshals should go to where he lives, get him, handcuff him, put him in chains, take him to jail, set his fine at $40 million.

He told the delegates the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors had “shut this mine down over and over and over again.”

Blankenship and Massey Energy ARE CRIMINALS! Just because they aren't ghetto and selling crack on the corner doesn't mean they are not criminals! Nothing in this country will ever change until we stop the REAL criminals in this country - the white collar ones!

My Criminal Justice professor was an awesome guy named Matt Robinson who talked about this repeatedly. Check out one of his reviews:

From the book Justice Blind? by Matt Robinson:
Chapter five elaborates the thesis of innocent bias by offering evidence that laws which inadvertently shield white-collar criminals, and the media’s role in perpetuating the myth that street crimes are more harmful to society than white-collar crimes, are not overtly intended to harm the poor and people of color. However because bias in the criminal justice process originates in the law and is functional for the monied and powerful, efforts to remedy the biases are typically met with resistance.

Chapter six further illustrates the effects of innocent bias by delineating the injustices of the war on drugs, and the staggering ill-effects of this war on the poor and people of color. Robinson iterates the compelling evidence that alcohol and tobacco, both legal yet addictive drugs, are exceedingly more harmful in their effect than illicit drugs. Law that distinguishes less harmful drugs as a crime and legalizes those that are most harmful is “bad law” (p. 205).
