For many, being jobless can seem never-ending
Despite optimism over recent job gains, one grim statistic casts a long shadow over the recovering economy -- a record 44% of the nation's 15 million unemployed have been out of work for more than six months.

And the evidence suggests that many of them may never completely rebuild the working lives they lost.

Never since the Great Depression has the U.S. labor market seen anything like it. The previous high in long-term unemployment was 26% in June 1983, just after the deep downturn of the early 1980s. The 44% rate in March translates into more than 6.5 million people.

In fact, nearly two-thirds of these workers have been jobless for a year or longer, new Labor Department reports show.

3. Don't I know it. I was unemployed from Nov. 2001-May 2005.
Mr. Brickbat was unemployed during part of that time, too. I have a college degree and he is a skilled tradesman. It was a nightmare.

5. I was unemployed for 26 weeks before my old company called me back but
on a temp-contractor basis. Can't get a full-time position.

And my tasks were taken over by a company employee from India. They flew him to the US to do mine and a couple other laid-off Americans tasks. I got hired back because he was incompetent, but he's still here and I've got to teach him my tasks. Fortunatly for me, he's a very slow learner or he's just incompetent.

8. 18 months for me so far
I totally believe the stats about a significant chunk of perfectly good people not being about to find suitable, stable work because I'm going through it myself. I'm competent, smart, responsible, assertive and... nothing. I apply to jobs and hear nothing. It's rare that I get a rejection letter. Most times, just nothing at all.

:-(

I am considering applying to grad school just to have a decent goal to work toward. I feel rudderless and wonder what to do with myself most days. Life hasn't felt fun or rewarding overall in a very long time.
