I was listening to the wrap up of todays Cleveland Indians game...
One of the call in guys said the Indians didn't have enough real Americans on the team.

The team is fully integrated with players who have roots in Latin America, the far east and all over this country.

I can't for the life of me see how someone wouldn't see that as racist.

I remember my Uncle said he wouldn't listen the Pirates because they got too dark.

I guess that even though we are clawing our way to a truly unique multi-cultured society, there are millions of people out there who would rather turn back to the time when Jim Crow was the de facto rule of the land.

And don't say that was just in the South because some of the most vicious and deadly riots happened in northern cities. The draft riots in New York during the Civil War turned ugly racial real quick.

What bothered me most was the host never challenged the called. What he did was tick off the white guys on the team. Pathetic.

But then again it is Cleveland's main outlet for Rush and Beck and other such upstanding and true Americans.

4. I didn't name the team...
Just like people who live in DC named the team the Redskins...

3. How sad is that?
They hearken back to a time that never truly existed...only in their fantasies...

The Good Old Days of Racism. Where colored people and women knew their place, and white men were king.

We cannot leave those days behind us fast enough.

Upstanding and true Americans are multi-cultured. And there are more of us all the time...

5. It reminds me of a schoolground conversation when I was in fifth or sixth grade
Said one of my fellow students, a red head, "I hate the Giants. They have too many (rhymes with triggers) on their team."

Said your humble hare, "So what? And besides, all baseball teams are integrated."

Said he, "The Giants still have too many (rhymes with triggers). Look at Willie Mays, Willie McCovey and all those guys. That's why I hate the Giants. I'm a Dodgers fan."

Broke in a third youngster, who was of my mind, "Well, what about Tommie Davis? Willie Davis? Johnny Roseboro?"

The red headed boy was not to be deterred with that kind simple but accurate reasoning. "Well, they're good (rhymes with triggers)."

I wonder if my old red headed colleague from Stockton, California was in Boston yesterday, or in Cleveland today?

8. You mean back in 1948....
The Indians did sign and put on the field the first African-American in the American League. Larry Doby and Satchel Page were both there the last time the Tribe won a World Series.

11. Sure they were fun...
I shared season rickets and went to about 70 games during those great years...

But they still haven't won a championship since 1948...

7. Isn't baseball rather ethnocentric?
They call it the "World Series", but I don't see teams from Africa or India competing. :)

I hate the expression "Real Americans". Even more when the speaker means "white people".

Ass monkeys!

12. The diversity on baseball teams is fantastic, but I wonder how the foreign players get visas when
there are plenty of American ball players who would otherwise get major league jobs.

I like the way we get the best ball players from all over the world to play here, but it is quite different from the usual conversations we have about foreigners taking American jobs. Are certain industries, e.g. sports, entertainment, more suitable for international labor competition and than others? Or does the fact that the foreigner players are paid the same as the Americans, rather than working for less, make the competition from overseas more acceptable?

The one problem with diversity that baseball does have is that fewer and fewer African Americans are playing the game. Diversity is increasing with more and more Asian and Latin players, but the number of Black players is steadily declining.

13. I believe our culture is
DEvolving. We evolved as far as the Big Bang took us and now it's BACKWARDS.

This is not fun at all. I miss fun.

But I gotta say that I never thought baseball was much fun....but I don't like NASCAR either. Just more circus, but we all need a distraction. I just wish gymnastics or figure skating were on TV on a weekly basis. (Or basketball players had to wear short panties like in the past instead of the pedal pushers of today.)

21. a little devil's advocacy...
I hear similar criticism about 'foreign players' in the NBA and NHL where 'foreign players' are predominantly of white, European descent. Sometimes it is a 'foreigner' thing rather than a 'race' thing. Nevertheless, it is still troubling.
