Whenever I hear of FOX news blaring on public televisions while customers wait
Edited on Fri Apr-16-10 06:34 AM by lunatica
I think of this scene in the movie 1984. I think this could easily happen eventually as a natural progression to the propaganda FOX spews. Am I being paranoid?

1. No. Chewing gum for the mind - with the added ingredient of subliminal coercion.

2. Whenever I see FOX playing in a public place I ask them to change it or turn it off
and if they don't or say they can't then I say, sorry to hear that and I leave without spending a dime.

I make it a point not to spend money where propaganda is dispensed.

6. I do the same except
I tell them why I am leaving. Surprises me how many other people will complain and leave after I say something.

8. I will not buy from a business that forces propaganda on their customers.
I politely tell them why I'm going elsewhere and then I go. And I don't come back.

10. Ditto... and I tell them I will not return and neither will my family
or any like-minded friends who I will shortly inform. To have FOX on, shows their contempt for their customers, IMHO and I intend to let them know so.

11. I was waiting for a car repair one day. So I turned on FreeSpeechTV
while I was waiting. The dealer had DISH tv and the other 5 people were paying no attention. So I took the remote and turned on FSTV.
Michael Palin was speakingwas giving a talk about food. One youngish farmer type in the back started making some noise. When I finally paid attention to him he made a loud statement that 'this guy probably knows nothing about farming.I bet he has never been on a farm.'
So I responded - 'I see preachers all over the TV talking about Jesus and heaven. I bet not a one of them has met Jesus or been to heaven. I bet you know some like that.'
The guy yelled something at me and stomped out. Never saw him again.

13. I have decided that I no longer just hide in a corner and let the bully push me around.
Ergo, yesterday I stand in the middle of the baggers holding my sign that quotes MLK on health care.

27. George Orwell was inspired to write 1984 by the Spanish Civil War
and by WW II. Perhaps he would have seen some Totalitarian regimes today and recognized them as what he was writing about. I think Bush's coded language would have been exactly what Orwell was warning against. And FOX News would very familiar to him as the propaganda arm of the Conservative Party and Bush's Presidency

17. No. But then again, I would always carry a diversion so I wouldn't have to look up at the screen.
And if it is in an airport or any large venue, I use noise-canceling head-phones to listen or watch alternative programming.

Blocking out such garbage works wonders--especially to the chagrin of the unenlightened, devoted viewer of such televisual filth.

20. I was getting my hair done
and they had Fox on, Glen Beck no less...so I asked them to change it. They did, and I still go to that salon and I've not seen Fox on since then...usually it's CNN. If they hadn't changed it, I would have left and not gone back. I wouldn't have been happy about it since I've been going there since I was 14, but sometimes you have to take a stand.

Now, whenever I'm out if they have Fox on..especially if it's on more than one tv, I ask them to change the channel of the tv closest to me. So far never a problem.

Most of the places I've been that have their tv's on, have them muted with closed caption. But I still ask them to turn it if Fox is on.

22. A television screen ought not to be turned on in any business,
including a restaurant, bar, hotel lobby, tire shop, hair salon, or any other place except perhaps a store that sells television sets.

This is arguably the most pernicious influence in human life, and to the extent we can turn it off, at home and in public, we'll have a better chance of survival.
