8 Invented Diseases Big Pharma Is Banking on
Edited on Fri Apr-16-10 11:08 AM by Mari333

Since direct-to-consumer drug advertising debuted in 1997, pharma's credo has been When The Medication Is Ready, The Disease (and Patients) Will Appear. Who knew so many people suffered from restless legs?

1. I was going to sarcastically mock this article with the ridiculous claim that autism wasn't real.
But that claim is actually in the article, so my satire is no match for the power of that fully operational article.

2. Wait, there's a treatment for adult autism-spectrum disorders?
What is it and how can I get it? :bounce:

Is the writer really suggesting we should not use diagnostic tools to find osteopenia? That is sure as shit not a "made up" disease. Neither is osteoporosis. Sorry this really reads like a paranoid conspiracy theory.

4. Alright, let me make a list of diseases that don't really exist...
Autism and their various spectrum disorders...
Restless Leg Syndrome...
Fungal infections...

What's next? HIV?

17. Yeah, I'm not saying "Big Pharma" is without its faults.
I just think some of the stuff mentioned in the article are real diseases and disorders. And RX-only drugs should not be on TV.

6. I agree with this article. I'm probably one of a very few people over the age of 60 who takes zero
prescription drugs. I watched as my dad was first given medications and then given even more to counter the side effects and then yet more to offset the effects of those. Now everything connected with aging is a 'disease' and you can take a pill to prevent it from happening, even if the listed side effects include bleeding, cancer, and death.

12. My father is like that, too.
He's so utterly confused anymore, and broke on top of it all. I suspect a lot of it is due to the multiple medications he's been taking.

13. I agree with you, partly.
But I developed rheumatoid arthritis at 30, then GERD and asthma a few years later. I am very thankful for the meds that allow me to live a nearly normal life at 46.

7. Yes, big Pharma CEOs lamented for years that healthy people wouldn't buy drugs
and voila! Now half of all television ads are for their shit.

8. These are real conditions
Although the real cure for them isn't a pill, it's something boring and non-profitable like a better diet, more exercise, or a social group that values quirkiness.

    18. This article is bullshit, the diseases are real ones
and the problems they cause in someone's life can be devastating.

This author is no different from the soulless jerks who tell depressed people to snap out of it or think positively. If they're not sick, they blame the people who are for causing it themselves.

Now if dear Martha had taken on those eyelash drugs, she might have been onto something, especially given their terrible side effects and the availability of fake eyelashes that have no side effects.

Or if she'd complained about prescription drug advertising directly to patients who are qualified neither to diagnose nor prescribe, she might have been on solid ground.

As it is, this article is bullshit filler and I'm surprised Alternet would give it the bandwidth.

    19. They aren't diseases, they're conditions, and are entirely medically valid.
might not all need pharma though
