The Gadsden flag is now the "tea party flag" according to the M$M
The San Diego Union Tribune reaffirms its right-wing roots by deploying at least seven reporters to cover tea party events yesterday. (I didn't know they even had seven reporters.)

And this: "CARMEL MOUNTAIN RANCH -- 7:21 p.m. -- About 150 demonstrators outside Carmel Mountain's post office are still going strong, holding signs condemning "Obamanation," and waving bright yellow Tea Party flags that feature a coiled rattle snake, and labeled "Don't tread on me."

7. In protest that the media is giving this flag to the teabaggers.
That is why.

8. So you unrec my post to protest something the media does?
That makes about as much sense as invading Iraq because Saudis flew planes in the WTC.

Whatever floats your boat I guess...

10. I find that offensive as an opponent of the Iraq war from early 2002.
Still, I am tired of hearing the media talking about the "patriotic" tea parties. Since these were the same reactionaries who shouted down and threatened anyone who did not support Bush.

12. You're offended by a mention of the stupidity of the Iraq war?
Might want to think about thickening your skin a bit.

You would be hard pressed to find anyone on DU who isn't tired of the CorpMedia's fawning over the tea party's faux patriotism. But I'm still at a loss to comprehend how unrecing my post constitutes some kind of protest.

I opposed the Iraq war from day one. I do not agree with you saying that my unrec of your post is the same thing as invading Iraq because of 9/11.

21. You are missing the point
Which is that unreccing a DUers post because it reports something the media does which offends you is fairly ridiculous. It's classic "shooting the messenger" type stuff. Besides do you somehow not WANT people to know that the media is acting this way? That is the net effect of your unrec. It limits exposure of the OP. You do know how this function works yes?

13. You did mis-use Un-Rec though
My understanding is that we "Rec" posts that cover a topic we consider important. We "Un-Rec" posts that we find trivial, badly-reasoned, or otherwise not worth the time. Rec vs. Un-Rec is NOT a poll on whether the news itself is good or bad.

If you carried the Gadsden Flag in the past as a protestor, and you know the flag's history, and you want to honor its roots and meaning, then I should think that you would "Rec" this post, to further heighten awareness that this flag is NOT a "Tea-Party Flag."

I guess it's your prerogative to Un-Rec bad news, even if you consider the news itself important. But that's not how DU works really. It's the highly-Rec'ed threads that get read the most...

27. The whole rec/unrec thing is broken beyond repair
You get unrecs like this one.

You get recs/unrecs based on anything anti-this or anti-that, no matter the facts.

You get rec/unrecs based on the author and not the topic.

You get rec/unrecs instead of actual discussion.

The whole damned thing is broken.

In the Navy we called it FUBAR.

I'm just a DU addict who uses the 'Greatest' page as my primary news portal. Un-rec'd threads don't end up there. Rec'd threads do.

16. You were using it CORRECTLY. The stupid TeaBaggers are not...they're too dumb to grasp its meaning -
that this nation would be one that NEVER strikes first, but would strike BACK. If TeaBaggers had even half a clue about that flag they would have been hoisting it against Bush's imperialistic invasion of Iraq.

because it doesn't strike unless seriously threatened and gives ample warning, but when it does, the strike is swift, sure and measured.

Union has been declared a "socialist" word by the teabaggers.

:-)

I remember telling an editor that there is a solution to their little problem... start covering news.

He was more than insulted until I started rattling news stories that either were under the fold (Health Care Reform passes and is signed)... or stories that never made it to the paper and were like stories.

24. I honestly don't see the big deal
nor do I see why people are reacting to their use of the flag, saying it affects anyone else's ability to use that flag. That flag has been adopted by many different groups and people throughout the history of this country. The idea that because the Tea Party is using it now means anything other than the Tea Party is using too, to me, is ridiculous.

33.  I really have no issue with the teapers using the flag.
It is a piece of history which belongs to all Americans. My issue is with the media in this particular case calling it the "tea party flag" rather than it's proper name and by so doing fanning the flames of ignorance about American history.

I seriously doubt that many of the tea baggers claiming the Gadsden flag represents them could explain its meaning let alone recite it's history.
